I currently have several large databases (1.2 Gig) on my
pc/laptop and would like to place them on SQL 2000 or a
better database. I currently am running XP professional
on a 2.0 ghz / p4m processor with 512 mb ram...

Which version should i buy to convert these access
databases and be able to run them local on my laptop to
crunch numbers? eventually we will be buying two new
servers and placing the databases on the server or in a
data warehouse... while i wait i could be moving them
over running sql on my pc. what are your suggestions...
bang for the buck...
also is there currently a .net or newer version of sql
coming soon? if so when?

You might as well use MSDE on your laptop - its basically
the SQL 2000 engine without the client tools and a 2 GB
database size limit which should be ok for you. I believe
it should be on one of the Microsoft Proffesional CD's
if you have access or you can download it from here
http://www.asp.net/msde/default.aspx
this version has already had SP2 applied.
You can use an access project to access it assuming you are
on Office 2000 or XP.
Another option if "eventually" means within 120 days is to
download or order on CD the SQL 2000 Enterprise Eval
edition.
