We use a DOS based program for HR,AR, AP etc. Our vendor
says we need to upgrade to SQL 2000i for fear of data
corruption. Any one else have an issue with this. It all
appears to be working fine. Thanks for the help

Your DOS based program (like all dos-type apps) relies on each client to
maintain data integrity. If a client crashes unexpectedly, data corruption
can occur. SQL 2000 runs as a service on a host computer, and maintains
data integrity through use of a write-ahead log and transactional recovery,
so there is some truth in his statements. The vendor may be pushing the new
technology to reduce his support costs as well as protect your data. While
upgrading just for the sake of upgrading isn't a good business practice
(unless you are SELLING the upgrades), you may be stuck with orphan
technology if you don't. Then upgrading gets expensive since you have to
pay specialists to convert systems and data.

Hi

I don't have specific experience with dos based programs, but unless
your vendor can give you detailed example of when this has occurred
and why, you are not going to be able to assess your own risk.

SQL7 still has a large user base and is well supported by MS. As far
as I know there are no plans to phase it out (but I am sure someone
will correct me if that is wrong!).

If you are not going to change or upgrade anything other than the
database I don't really see the point. If your vendor want you to
upgrade from the DOS versions then you should also consider what
options you have from other vendors!

This is a generic thing rather than something specific to that product.
Anything that uses shared "flat" files rather than a dbms for multi-user use is
always going to have a window of opportunity for corruption when software or
hardware errors occur.
