Author How to create unique values without using Identity property

Hi,

I've been playing around with Partition Views. I see that a row cannot
be inserted into a member table via the partition view if a member table
contains a column with the Identity property.

My question is this: What is the best way to generate unique values
within a table that I can insert as the Primary Key value if I can't use
the Identity property? Do you have any code snippets that I can have or
areas of SQL Server documentation that I can look at?

I've been looking at the Uniqueidentifier datatype, but it has a few
downsides, so I want to avoid using this.
