I have 4 Application servers and many clients to them.

How many licenses I need for SQL Server? Only 4?

Only Application servers are using SQL Server....

You need to license your clients regardless of how they access SQL Server.
Coming through a middle tier or portal is irrelevent.

Not true, all the clients using the 4 applications are
using SQL Server. Have a look at
