I believe that QA and EM use the ODBC interface. And, I believe that one of
SQL service pack installs or MDACs switches the default protocol to TCP/IP.

You are almost right. Enterprise Manager works via DMO. But
Query Analyzer and SQL-DMO use the same ODBC interface
(SQLSVC.DLL)

Yes but is it possible to be switched when installing a service pack or
something. I am having problems connecting to my SQL server through EM and
QA it come up after about three minutes. When I try to connect to a remote
SQL server I have waited 10 minutes and nothing. Now if I use osql and isql
it works fine. So some one suggested to me that there was the KB about
installing a service pack or something that changed a setting.

Brett,

MDAC 2.6 changed the order. Look at Q300420. I cannot find the actual
article that mentions the change.
