| Hi there
Excuse me sir, I have a problem and so a question about upgrading exchange
5.5 to exchange 2000.
All of setting in my Domain is as follows:
A Windows 2000 Domain in mixed mode with 2 DC and 1 GCS.
An Exchange 5.5 that had installed on a BDC when my Domain was a Windows NT
4 domain so it runs on a DC now .
Its Directory dosen't synchronize with Windows 2000 AD.
It has just itself Directory.
I'm going to upgrade this Exchange server to Exchange server 2000 so I need
to run following programs:
Setup/ForestPrep
Setup/DomainPrep
ADC\Setup.exe
But when I run 2 first programs this error appeared:
{
The component "Microsoft Exchange Forest Prepration" cannot be assigned the
action "Forestprep" because:
- Setup unable to access the Windows 2000 Active Directory
-Failed to contact the Schema Master Server for this Active Directory Forest
}
and at running third program this error appeared:
{
The network address is invalid.
Facility : win32
Id no : c00706ab
Microsoft Active Directory Connector Setup
}
Then I attempted to run :
dcdiag /s:MYSERVER /v /test:knowsofroleholders
and I saw this error in it's output :
.......................... MYSERVER failed test KnowsOfRoleHolders
What's wrong?
Thanks in advance
Regards

| Install W2k Support tools on the W2k CD, use netdiag to check network and
use dcdiag utility to check FSMO Roles.

| This is a mickey mouse fix from Microsoft but it works for this exact issue.
There is/was nothing wrong with my DNS architecture, I think it's just Exchange 2000's setup process that doesn't bother to check the forest root domain for the Schema Master location when you're using a disjointed DNS architecture.
