hi,
I need to install an ex2000 on a small office with about 10 users.
1. I do not know yet if there is already install a win2000server. But in
case there is no win2000server . Do I need to run the dcpromo and configure
the users and thats all . Or do I have to do some more configurations
becuase of the ex2000 installation that I will do later ???
2. About the ex2000 installation. As far as I know in such a organization
all I have to do is run the setup of the exchange server and add an mx
record on my dns server. In this place the ex2000 should work and send and
rercive emails from the world. Is it ??? or do I need to do more things ???
It would be great to get the spesifiec answers and not in a link to an
article.
3. As far as I know I have to install the ex2000 on a win2000server that is
NOT a domain controller. IS IT ???
4. In case I have just 1 server with win2000 server and I can not get
another server. In such a cease of an office with 10 users and the DC is
also the EX2000server and also the dns server. Can it work ok , or there
will be a lot of problems ???

thanks alot,
Gil.

Yes you will need to run DCPROMO if Active Directory is not already in
place, I would suggest you configure the user accounts after installing
Exchange that way their mailboxes will be created at the same time.

As far as the MX records goes it needs to be on a public DNS server and
needs to point to an A record that in turn points to the public IP address
that the organization owns, it could be more complicated you have not
mentioned if you are using a Firewall or ISA Server or NAT etc etc

You will need to make sure the Default Recipient Policy is also configured
to use the correct domain name or you will not be able to receive Internet
based mail.

You can install E2K on either a Domain Controller or a member server it is
really your choice, for 10 users it really does not matter.

I would suggest you look at www.microsoft.com/exchange and read some of the
documents there.

Hope this gets you started.

Gil,

There needs to be a few things in place before you install Exchange.

1. A domain controller this means yes, you must run DCPromo on a 2nd Windows
2000 Server. Exchange requires AD and by running DCPromo this will set up AD
for you.

2. DNS. If your behind a firewall make your MX record point to your LIVE IP
on the WAN side. Also make sure you forward the appropriate ports to your
Exchange Server's IP address. After you have configured your MX record.
Allow 24-48 hours for your MX record to replicate across the net.

3. Now you have a DC, AD and DNS all set and running like a champ then start
on the Exchange box. Before you can install Exchange you should run the
/forestprep and /domainprep switches. This will require you to be logged in
as a user who has rights to the Schema . I suggest the Enterprise admin
account. Not to go into too much detail, those switches will modify the
schema to include important entries for Exchange.

4.Finally you can install Exchange and mail enable your user accounts.

Make sure you patch your systems with all the latest hotfixes and SP. I
would hold off on SP3. There seems to be quit a bit of posts coming in
reporting issues.

Microsoft's Security Analyzer is a nice tool...

Good Luck,

Mark,
First I want to thank you for your TIME .
Second , I still have few questions regard those issues:
About the MX record:
1. In case I do not have any firewall or NAT, I just add an A record like
this: under the host I give the name of the mail server. and then add the ip
address of the mail server.
Then I add an MX record like this: under host or domain I leave it blank,
under mail server I configure the name of the mail server from the A record
I already added. IS IT OK ???
2 .In case I DO have a firewall I must do the same , except that I have to
remember that under the A record I have to give the PUBLIC ip addrsss of the
of the mail server. And to open the ports on the firewall.
3. In case I configure the MX record OK on my DNS server, I do NOT need
that my ISP will configure ANYTHING. Is it ???
4. I understood that even that I already installed the DNS server, I can
tell my ISP to configure the MX record on his dns server, and like this I DO
NOT NEED to add any MX record or A record on MY DNS server. I just have to
configure on my DNS server that HIS name server is the DNS server of my ISP.
IS IT CORRECT ???
5. How can you have a clue that the problem in my configuration is a missing
or wrong MX record ? In such a case I would be able to send mails to the
world, but I will NOT be able to GET mails from the world. IS IT CORRECT ???
6. In case of an installation of an Ex2000 with only 10 users , and only 1
domain: Do I need to run the /forestprep and /domainprep ???
thanks,
GIl.

1. Correct
2. Correct
3. As long as your DNS Server is a public DNS server that is correct.
4. Correct
5. You can look at the DNS entries that are available to the public using
www.dnsreport.com and you can also try using Telnet to connect to your
server from the outside world, you are correct if the MX record is not
configured correctly you should still be able to send mail but not receive
mail.
6. If you are logged in using an account that is a member of the Enterprise
Admin and Schema Admin, when you run the setup of Exchange it will
automatically run ForestPrep and DomainPrep for you.

Hope this helps.

Mark !
1. How do I know if my DNS server is a PUBLIC DNS server ?
2. In case I have this little LAN, that uses Active directory and
EX2000server: do I MUST NEED to configure a DNS server in my domain, or I
can use a DNS server of my ISP ???
3. Just to be sure :
The steps of installing the ex2000server are:
A. Install win2k with sp2 , and iis. The mechine will be member server.
B. login as Administrator (the administrator is part of the schema admin
group, and part of the enteprise admin group) and RUN the exchange2000
setup.
C. Check that under the Default Recipient Policy the smtp address is:
@domainname.com .
D. Configure the MX record on my DNS server.
E. Create the mailboxes for the users.
F. Install sp2 for ex2000.
G. Check mails inside and outside the organzation.
IS this correct ??? Thats all ???

Mark - You are the ONE !!!

thanks ,
GIl.

Gil, some tips:

- A public DNS server is an ISP's DNS server. A private DNS server knows
only about the computers in your organization/domain.
- You should configure your own DNS server (it can be the same computer as
your domain controller). Configure the TCP/IP properties of the domain
controller and the Exchange 2000 server with the IP address of ONLY your
private DNS server. Then, either you can configure the DNS server to
forward requests to your ISP's DNS server, or you can rely on root hints for
internet DNS resolution. (I prefer forwarders.)
- Both Windows 2000 SP3 and Exchange 2000 SP3 can be downloaded now.

Ok. Sounds good.
1. Still need to know, is this are the right steps for installation of ex2k:
A. Install win2k with sp2 , and iis. The mechine will be member server.
B. login as Administrator (the administrator is part of the schema admin
group, and part of the enteprise admin group) and RUN the exchange2000
setup.
C. Check that under the Default Recipient Policy the smtp address is:
@domainname.com .
D. Configure the MX record on my DNS server.
E. Create the mailboxes for the users.
F. Install sp2 for ex2000.
G. Check mails inside and outside the organization.

2. How much time does it takes from the minute that I configure the MX
record till it is update and I can GET email from the world ? Someone told
me here that it can take 24 - 48 hours . Does it ??? In most of the cases
how much time does it takes ?

3. When I come to install an EX2k on a little LAN with 10 users and 1
domain,
I know I MUST check on my DC that the AD is online, and that the I have a
DNS server online. DO I have to check more things on the DC before I start
the EX2k install ???

thanks,
Gil.

Ok. Sounds good.

D. Configure the MX record on my DNS server.
E. Create the mailboxes for the users.
F. Install sp2 for ex2000.
G. Check mails inside and outside the organization.

2. How much time does it takes from the minute that I configure the MX

Gil,

One thing you might want to make sure you do is install NNTP when you
install Windows 2000, Exchange 2000 requires NNTP be installed.

Your DNS can take 24-48 hours to propogate around the Internet.

Yes you must have AD up and running correctly before you install E2K

You keep mentioning "your" DNS server, as I have said before your MX record
MUST be on a Public DNS server, and not your LAN based DNS server, if it is
not on a Public DNS server you will not be able to receive mail.

Just to make it sure:
The DNS server inside my LAN, is configured as enable forward with the ip
address of the dns server of my isp. In such a case you can tell that MY DNS
server is an PUBLIC DNS server ???
