Does anybody know of a way that I can examine and modify
the permissions on an item in a public folder. For
instance, I want to change the owner for a task that is
posted to a public folder when its original owner leaves
the organisation. Any suggestions?

You can do it programmatically or use the M: drive.
Exchange has no GUI for item level permissions.
