Moving the Information Stores

| I want to move our Private and Public Info. Stores and
logs from the E-Mail Server to our SAN so that we can have
more disk space available. I think I know how to move the
stores and logs (change their locations in the Exchange
System Manager), but I was wondering how much downtime I
can anticipate. About how long would it take to move a 35
Gig. Information Store? It it takes awhile to move it in
this method, is it possible to back up the store to tape
and restore it to the new location on the san and then
change the location in the Exchange System Manager? I'm
looking for the quickest and cleanest way to do this.
Thanks for any suggestions!

| You might consider do something like this, rather than messing around in the
registry...
1) Back up the IS
2) Restore to a temporary location on the SAN (like J:\temp)
3) Stop the Information Store Service
4) Rename the MDBDATA folder that holds your databases to MDBDATA.OLD
5) Create a new MDBDATA folder in the same location
6) Restart the Information Store Service and mount new databases
7) Move them in the Exchange System Manager (including the log file
location)
8) After the new databases have been moved, again stop the Information Store
Service
9) Rename the MDBDATA folder on the SAN to MDBDATA.NEW
10) Create a new MDBDATA folder on the SAN
11) Move the databases from the temp folder on the SAN to the new MDBDATA
folder on the SAN
12) Start the Information Store Service again and mount the original
databases from the SAN
Downtime would be minimal... say 10-15 minutes max?

| I assume that I can do the backup and restore early in the
day (Steps 1 and 2) and the "changing" of the database/log
location (Steps 3 through 12) later in the day or will
that cause me to lose changes to the database made during
the day? Or will the log files "restore" changes to the
database made during the day?

| One more question related to the question below. If I do
a backup, I assume I should let the backup delete the
logs?
