| OK, let's clarify something. In order to scan inbound/outbound mail, the AV
software for Exchange has to run on the Exchange server. It cannot reside
anywhere else. That help?

| But should i use a anti-virus product that sits on the exchange server
itself or should i install a SMTP virus scanner on another box to scan
incomming & outgoing emails as the exchange information stores seems
sensative to things like av.

| OK, see that wasn't your initial question. I would actually do Both! The
problem with an SMTP gateway is that it will not handle mail that is handled
internally. I assure you that there are plenty of viruses that originate
from inside the organization (downloaded from internet, what have you). In
addition, install the Exchange-based AV on the Exchange server. Most
current AV scanners do not have a large footprint and will work just fine
with the Information Store. Not having AV on my Exchange server would make
me much more nervous that having it on.
