Log files for Exchange are not being dumped
|
|
|
| I have a box running exchange 2000 with Windows 2000
server. It seems as though the log files are not being
dumped or deleted. I have over 17 GB worth from over two
years. I have looked at the settings and see that remove
log files in the server properties is checked with a date
limit of seven days (The standard I believe). I am down
to 6 MB on this server. How do I go about deleting these
logs?
Thanks in Advance.

| sounds like you mean transaction log files - these are only purged by backup
routine...the "remove log files older than X days" is for message tracking
logs...

| Susan,
Thanks for your reply.
I read about transaction logs being only purged when a
back up is completed. I did this with no luck. Perhaps
I was not doing a proper back up. Can you inform me of
the steps and application needed to complete this.
Thanks,
Dave

| Are you doing online backups? you should probably read MS disaster recovery
whitepaper for Exchange 2000...are there multiple databases/stores? If you
do offline backups, or if you only backup individual databases, your log
files won't get purged...

Susan is correct in that the log files should
automatically be deleted when you do a online backup.
However I have some questoins for you, 1 What backup
software are you using? If you are using Veritas then it
may not purge the log files if it is failing to backup a
certain mailbox. So check your logs and see if there are
any failures. Also if you are doing brick level backups of
your server then the logs files wont be purged.
You can allways manually delete the log files after
shutting down the server, BUT first read the disaster
recoivery white paper before doing so. The process is
really simple but you should be aware of the consequences.
Also I would do a restore to a test server just to be sure
your backups are good before you delete the log files.
Once they are goine there is no getting mail back if your
backups are not good. Ihope that helps
