| I have an Exchange2000 with MTA service running. We DO NOT
have MS Mail, CC:Mail or other Exchange servers...
Exchange2000 is the only one sending and receiving emails.
But we also have a UNIX box, on it Sendmail is configured
as a backup email server. The Sendmail also uses mail
relay on the Exchange2000 to send some emails out.
Question, do we need MTA service?
Thanks.

| Well technically this service should not be used in your scenario. However
there are some rare possible scenarios in which it could be needed. One
example would be a bad attempted delivery to a user that would "think" it
needed the MTA (based on bad addressing, old contact in a personal address
book, etc.). The MTA not running would allow this to set in a queue without
the NDR. For the rare occasions like this and for the small resources that
would be used in maintaining a MTA, it may be best to keep in running.
