Does anyone know or have an idea why we would not be able to purge
mailboxes? In the Exchange System Manager we can navigate down to the
Private information store containing the mailbox we would like to purge. We
right-click the appropriate mailbox and the Reconnect and Purge tasks are
greyed out. This is the same for all mailboxes in this store.

Any ideas?

You cannot purge a mailbox if it is still attached to a user object. You
must delete the mailbox first (using AD Users and Computers) - NOTE: make
sure you have deleted mailbox retention set to something other than 0
(default is 30 days). Then, run the Mailbox Cleanup Agent. The mailbox
should appear with a red X on it. Right click the mailbox, and
Purge/Reconnect should now be available.

Yes, you have to first delete the mailbox from the user account in active
directory users and computers. Then Right click on the "mailboxes" object
and "run cleanup agent". The mailbox will then show a red X on it and can
be purged. Otherwise after mailbox deletion the default time for automatic
purge is 30 days (this can be changed, but 30 days is the default).

Bryan,
Thanks for the speedy answer! The deleted mailbox retention was set to 0
days. I changed it to 15 then re-ran the Mailbox Cleanup Agent. As you
said, the particular mailbox we were trying to remove came back with the red
"X" and we were then able to purge it.
