Author Sending as an Alias

Hi,

I need to know if there is anyway for an Outlook 200/XP client to send
from there Exchange 2000 mailbox as one of the email aliases, which is
not their primary email address. I have attempted some configuration
using the 'FROM' field however, whenever an email address is typed in,
it is resolved to the mailbox name and delivered from the primary
email address, not the alias as desired. Is there anyway to
accomplish this without setting up multiple exchange 2k mailboxes??

Well, this is kind of a workaround but I use it all the time:

Create a second "fake" POP3 mail account within Outlook with the desired
reply-to address. Configure the POP3 server as something like
fake.domain.com (anything other than your actual mail server - to avoid
accidentally downloading all the email!) and then configure smtp to use your
actual Exchange server w/authentication, then use the correct domain\user
and password for the smtp authentication. You can then specify in the
send/receive settings that you don't want to "receive mail items" for this
account but you do want to "send mail items", that way you can avoid the
failure messages when it tries to contact the fake POP3 server. Now, when
the user wants to send from the second email address he/she can just choose
the
account from the 'Accounts' pull-down (next to the send button) in the new
message window. This will send the email with the desired 'reply-to'
address.

Note, this works great in Outlook2002 (xp) but not in Outlook2000 due to the
difference in modes that exists in 2000. Also note that when you change
your domain password you'll have to manually change the smtp authentication
password (it _will_ prompt you, so you can just change and save it then).

Sorry, I know the explanation given above is not too detailed, more "big
picture", so if you get hung up on any of the specific details let me know
and I can elaborate. Hopefully it makes sense though...

Good luck!

hp.
