Author Exchange Instant Messaging presence information not updated

I set up Exchange IM in such a way that it works seamlessly between our LAN
and the Internet through an ISA Server firewall. ISA Server is configured
to map an external IP address to the internal address of the Exchange box
(EX-SP3) through the use of a Web Publishing Rule. I activated polling on
the Exchange Server (as described in Q283022, Q285781 & Q326013), then
installed and configured Windows Messenger 4.6.0082 on the clients (in
polling mode). It works pretty well: Exchange contacts on the LAN can chat
with Exchange contacts on the Internet. Remote Assistance works great also
(trying to launch the whiteboard, however, returns a SIP Stack 488 status
code). There is, however, a more pressing problem. Regardless of where a
client is connecting from (LAN or Internet), presence information is not
being updated. Contacts are shown as being online while they have been
disconnected for a while and vice versa. At this point, I'm not sure whether
the problem lies with the configuration of the Exchange or the ISA box. To
be honest, using a Web Publishing Rule to proxy IM requests from the
Internet does not seem to me as the proper way to do this. Then again, this
bug might not have anything to do with ISA Server.

What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Nicolas!

we´ve encountered the same problem in various "ExChange test environments"
WITHOUT the ISA-Server.
So i would say we have an exchange-probleme here.
