My company is changing names!!!

| I have a windows 2000 enviornement. Two domain controllers (a file server,
the other an exchange 2000 server) and two Citrix Metaframe servers. My
company is changing it's name and with that I have to change the domain name
for my network. Does anyone have any suggeations on how to do this? Has
anyone ever changed the network domain name and if so , what steps where
taken to ensure a smooth transition? Any suggestions or tips would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

There are no steps to a smooth transition. With the .NET server release, you
may be able to upgrade and change names during the process.
But until then the ONLY way to rename an AD is to add a NT 4.0 BDC to your
mixed mode domain and replicate. This NT 4.0 BDC will hold your domain info
while you run dcpromo on EVERY server in the AD domain. You must have a NT
4.0 BDC holding your domain info because running dcpromo on your Win 2k
servers remove all this info. Once you have totally blown away your AD
domain, promote the NT 4.0 BDC to PDC and start over. The only time you can
set the AD domain name is during dcpromo. Upgrade the NT 4.0 PDC to Win 2k,
then run dcpromo.
If you have made the switch to native mode, your just plain out of luck
until .NET is released. If you have child domains it *really* gets messy.
You have to do the same process starting with the child domains and work
your way to the root.

| The others have you covered on the rename. I would only add that if you
also need to change the NetBIOS domain name, then you have to install a new
AD domain from scratch and use ADMT (or other tool) to migrate users over to
it.
