Author Automatic forwarding email
Wade

I must be missing something. I want to have E2K automatically forward my
email to another address (i.e. me2@hotmail.com). I follow the steps in KB
article Q281926 (create an email enabled "contact" in AD using
me2@hotmail.com as the email address, then under the Exchange General tab in
my "user" (me1.mydomain.com - with email address me1@mydomain.com) account
in AD, click delivery options, forward to, then select the "contact".) but
no email is forwarded.

What am I missing?

I've also tried to setup 2 SMTP addresses under the "Email Addresses" tab in
my "user" (me1.mydomain.com) account and setting the 2nd (me2@hotmail.com)
address as Primary - (which I read at www.exchangefaq.org) - but this didn't
work either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Wade.

Hello,

This should work, please see
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...;en-us;Q317652.

Please also check if you have "deliver to both addresses" option set.
Any error messages?

Can you send a message directly to the contact you created?

The contact doesn't show up in the GAL in outlook or under "All contacts".
I guess I don't know how to send to a contact that was created in AD. If I
type the email address of the contact, the message will go thru (ie type
me2@hotmail.com in the To: field), but I cannot select (or find) the contact
from the drop down in the To: field.

Thanks for the response.

I have the "deliver to both addresses" checked (that has been checked ever
since I've been attempting to automatically forward email). I don't see any
error messages (besides the event viewer, is there somewhere else to look
for error messages?). I reviewed Q317652, there was no check next to "allow
automatic forward", so I put a check there and tried again, still no luck.
As for creating a mail enabled contact, I have done this.

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Again, thanks in advance.

You might want to check and try to check the "Allow Out of Office Responses"
box. In System Manager --> Global Settings --> Internet Message Format -->
Default Properties --> Advanced. The other way I've gotten it to work is by
creating a new, "dummy" mailbox (not contact) that has an Alternate
Recipient of your external contact. Forward messages from your mailbox to
the dummy box, which bounces anything to it to the outside contact. Longer
way around, I know, but I have had that work.

OK, how did you create the contact? That might be the best place to start
troubleshooting.

Thank you for the response.

Something else I've tried. I've tried get a message to automatically
forward to someone else within the exchange network and that doesn't work
either. There must be a setting somewhere that I'm missing.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to where I might look.
(Could it be a group policy? The only Group Policy I have is the default
Domain Policy for the domain which hasn't been edited. Is there something
in there that I should look at?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Wade.

Thank you for your response.

I can't automatically forward to anyone within the exchange network either
(please see my post to "Steele" in this thread). Do you think it could be a
Group Policy issue? Or am I missing a setting somewhere?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I can't think of any default policies that would cause this.
Are you able to just send a message directly to the other user?
How many Exchange servers do you have?
Can you see if the messages are ending up in one of the queues?
How about Message Tracking, can you find out where the process is breaking
down?
Are you sure your SMTP addresses are configured correctly? You mentioned
that your addresses are "mydomain.com" - is that what your AD DNS is set as?

I can send directly to the other user.
We have just 1 exchange server
The Queues are fine, the messages are not stuck in them.
The forwarded messages aren't even in the Message Tracking logs and I don't
see any errors.
Our AD domain is different than our registered domain for a little added
security. Our registered domain (which you can tell from this post) is
preinnewhof.com. Our AD DNS is prein.xyz (ficticious) and xyz is not a
standard high level domain name.

But I can manually forward any email anywhere (interanl or external
receipents) and we've had no problems sending or receiving email from/to
anywhere. I just can't forward email automatically.

I wouldn't think a non standard DNS name would make a difference since the
"name" is only for our (humans) purposes, the computer (DNS) converts the
"name" to an IP address and uses the IP address to make connections.

I do appreciate your thoughts and welcome any more suggestions.

Thanks.

Wade.

So, maybe the messages are never starting the "bounce"?

Maybe check under ESM --> Global Settings --> Internet Message Formats -->
Default (or whatever else is there) Properties --> Advanced --> and check to
see if Allow Automatic Forward is checked.

You might also be able to turn up your Diagnostic Logging levels on your
server and maybe find a problem in your Event Viewer.
