Hi,

I currently use a product called SLMail 5
(http://www.seattlelab.com/products/slmail) for my e-mail and my
organization is considering moving to Exchange. Can anyone offer any
insights into the pros and cons. We currently has multiple domains with
several accounts each.

Thanks.

Well in just reading their info from the website, I can say you pay for what
you get. SLMail5 only provides POP3 and SMTP with a few additional admin
features. The price point to Exchange is probably much lower but you are
basically just getting a standard commercial mail server, similar to what
most ISP's may provide.

Exchange 2000 is very robust and has a multitude of collaboration features.
Not to mention it is made by Microsoft. Exchange 2000 is also tightly
integrated with Active Directory which allows you have more control over
your users, SLMail5 is not. I am not going to explain every great feature
Exchange 2000 provides but point to you Microsoft's Exchange 2000 website
for you to read all its features, www.microsoft.com/exchange

If all your wanting is a basic email server to send and receive mail then
SLMail5 will do. Anything more then I highly recommend Exchange 2000.

It's pretty much like the difference between Notepad and Word. If all you
are going to do is send plain messages, then either will work.

Now if you want shared folders, advanced management, greater control, better
user experience, and many other features, then you'd look at Exchange. In
general, Exchange is a Enterprise Email system, as is Lotus Notes. There are
many features in both platforms that make them Enterprise solutions.
