Instant Messaging Domain vs. regular domain logins
|
|
| Gabe Matteson 2002-10-05, 8:32 pm |
| Greetings ,
I have created a web site on exchange and named it - im.mydomain.com
with the host header of im.mydomain.com.
I created a instant messaging server in Exchange that points to that web
site. Which would make the instant messaging domain that users would log
into be im.mydomain.com (i.e gmatteson@im.mydomain.com). Now it says when I
enable the instant messaging feature for a user that if the RVP entry in DNS
isn't found then users will be able to log in using the IM domain which is
stated above.
Does this mean, if i enter a RVP record into dns that points to the instant
messaging server (im.mydomain.com) then users will be able to log in as
gmatteson@mydomain.com their regular domain? I entered a RVP record in and
logged into the regular domain and it works, I right clicked on the user
name and it says my sign in name is gmatteson@im.mydomain.com. All the IM
works, I'm just trying to figure out what everything does, thanks.
Maybe you can shed some light,
- Gabe

| Hi Gabe,
That is *exactly* how it is supposed to work. The RVP DNS record
essentially unifies an SMTP namespace with an IM namespace. Without the RVP
record, users would need to log on using their exact IM alias, which would
be the user@im.mydomain.com. With the RVP record, they can log on using
user@mydomain.com and DNS resolution of the RVP record will point them to
the proper IM server and they will be able to log on.
Hope this helps.

| Where could I find out more about this? I have just been using the
user@im.mydomain.com. I didn't know that you could setup the other way.
thanks,
