On August 12 I turned on deleted item retention to retain
messages for 360 days.

On September 24, I was getting ArcServe backup errors when
trying to back up the information store. Errors said that
the information store wasn't mounted even though users
weren't having any problems.

On October 3, to fix this issue, I thought I'd try
stopping and restarting Exchange services. Unfortunately,
I couldn't get the Information Store service to stop, so I
shut down the server and restarted it.

The Exchange services started, but the Public folder and
Mailbox stores failed to mount.

Would deleted item retention have anything to do with
these issues that have recently occurred.

Dan

I cannot think that Deleted Item Retension would cause these issues, however
in my opinion have the deleted item retension set to almost 1 year is a bit
excessive.

Are you running into any disk space problems? You will! I'd say, set it to
30 days, max. If people can't figure out that they need something back in a
month, well....
