Defragment Exchange Server?
|
|

| Is it ok to run Disk Defragment on a Exchange server? I'm
worried it could screw up the Exchange Databases...
Thanks,
Markus

| DONT run it on the drive with the Exchange databases, Exchange has its own
defrag utility, it does a defrag of the databases on its own and you can
also do an offline defrag using ESEUTIL which ships with Exchange 2000.

| Exchange's internal defragmentation only does an online defragmentation, and
it does not shrink the database (only an offline defrag can do this).
According to all of the defragmentation software manufacturers, it is
completely safe to defrag a drive containing Exchange databases or
transaction logs. In addition, there do not appear to be any articles or
other information from Microsoft that says this is not supported.
Therefore, I would assume that it is totally safe to do this.
If Boris has some specific reasons why this should not be done, perhaps he
will share it for the benefit of everyone.

This is correct. The defrag APIs provided by Microsoft as part of the
operating system fully support allowing Exchange datastores (as well as SQL
database devices) to safely be moved online without having to stop Exchange
(or SQL) related services. The defrag APIs are tightly integrated with the
file system, caching system and memory manager and handle all of the low
level I/O synchronization required to allow even files that are open to
safely be moved online. The only exceptions are the pagefile, hibernate
files, directories on FATx partitions and $MFT and related metadata on NTFS
partitions.
Please note that defragmenting can be an I/O intensive process. Therefore,
most defrag vendors recommend to run defrag passes during your less busy
times so as not to take system resources away from more critical processes.
