Duplicating production Exchange in another domain?
|
|
| Dan Haygood 2002-10-05, 8:26 pm |
| I would like to duplicate a snapshot of my production Exchange 2000 server
to a "play" server in a disconnected domain.
The original server is SERVER in domain PRODUCTION.COM, running a single
storage group, installed with the "Typical" options and SP2, running on
W2KSP2.
The destination server is PLAY in domain LAB.COM, installed with the
"Typical" options and SP2, running on W2KSP2.
I attempted to backup SERVER using the Exchange-enhanced NTBACKUP, to a USB2
hard drive. I then plugged the hard drive into PLAY, and tried doing a
restore, using the Exchange-enhanced NTBACKUP on PLAY. I get a number of
messages indicating failure. These are below.
I don't really care what I did wrong; what I'd like to know, is how to do
this right.
Also, how will the domain LAB.COM know about my users? Aren't they AD
objects in PRODUCTION.COM? Is there a way to transfer them to LAB.COM? I
would think not, because of the intertwinedness of it all, starting with
GUIDs and SIDs. So, is there a way to connect a user I create in LAB.COM to
a mailbox for a user of the same name in PRODUCTION.COM?
Lastly, I just need mailbox access through the Exchange SDK (e.g.
HrOpenExchangePrivateStore() and HrMailboxLogon()). Would I even need the
users present in AD to open the mailboxes from the database?
Thanks,
- Dan Haygood

| Add a DC to the prod domain. Make it a GC. Wait until all objects
replicate. Take if off prod network and put on own completely isolated
subnet. Follow kb article Flexible Single Master Operation Transfer and
Seizure Process [Q223787] to seize the FSMO roles from the original (now
non-existent) DC object in your replica of the AD. Now add the server that
you'll run Exchange 2000 on to this lab domain. Name it the same as prod
Exchange server. Use backup tape to restore prod Exchange 2000 server
backup to this server. Unless I missed something you should now have a copy
of the prod domain. Don't ever connect the prod and lab networks.
(There may be an easier way but this is all I can think of now! Hope it
helps.)

| Thanks, David, I will try this...but other posters, if you have suggestions,
let me hear them, too! - Dan
P.S.I would like to have them connected, but it's not strictly necessary.
Maybe there is a way to "re-secure-itize" a domain's users so that bad
things won't happen on reconnection? So that you get two "Dan Haygood"s,
but two different users.
