Author External Pop3 clients can't send email through virual server

Mate of mine is trying to configure his exchange server to support
external pop3 client - pop 3 works fine but sending causes the
standard

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was
rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxx@xxx.com'.
Subject 'xxx', Account: 'mail.computer-support.net.au', Server:
'mail.computer-support.net.au', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550
5.7.1 Unable to relay for xxx@xxx.com', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Now this behaviour is expected since relaying on the virtual SMTP
server should not be permitted.

Tried a few options already just thinking about any security issues
for anything that may work I have read about pop before relay. Does
exchange 2000 support this and if not what would be the best and most
secure option available to me ?

You would need to check the box on your pop3 client "My outgoing mail server
requires authentication"

Exchange supports this. By default, only those who can authenticate to the
Exchange server can relay. So, have the client configure his email settings
so that his Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) requires authentication. He can use
the same credentials he uses to get his mail with POP3.

Incidentally - is the client going through a PIX? If so, you will need to
turn off the MailGuard feature on the PIX, since it will not allow the AUTH
command to go through, and cause the authentication to fail, resulting in
the same 550 error...
