Strange problem with mail staying in queue and bandwidth grinding to a halt.

Migrated from Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT 4 to Exchange 2000 on a new server.
Everything is installed on the one server due to limited resources of the
company (Win2k + AD + DNS + EX2k). The migration went well until I migrated
the Internet Mail Connector. Now, messages to a few users are sent just
fine but when the company sends out a product list email to it's clients,
they experience the problem. For troubleshooting, the list has been culled
to about 50 recipients. After 24 hours, it hasn't completed yet!

I had thought that it might be a DNS issue but DNS resolution *seems* to be
working fine. I ran NetDiag and there were no errors. There are no errors
in the SMTP protocol log and nothing that seems to point to a problem in the
event viewer logs. Still, I might have missed something. It's not a
bandwidth issue either.

I have been trying to pin this down for weeks and am getting nowhere fast.
I would be inclined to think that it might be that all these services are
running on a single server and there might be software issues related to
that (there are more than enough hardware resources) but have found no
articles that pertain to that. I read a post on one of the other groups by
someone who seemed to have the same problems but there was no solution or
commends that followed up. Plus, SBS2000 does this without issues (I've set
up a few SBS2k systems and everything works beautifully).

I'm close to just rolling back to Exchange 5.5...or getting a job at the
local donut shop instead.

My head is on the guillotine and I need help!

TIA.

Created an SMTP connector in E2k to take over from the Ex5.5 IMC after it
was decomissioned.

During troubleshooting I had my ISP's DNS servers in here. It did not
change the behaviour.

The queue shows Retry and Queued when messages are enumerated.

Ordinarily you don't need to create the SMTP connector. SMTP mail is
handled by the SMTP service in IIS 5, which should have been installed prior
to installing E2K, and therefore been able to send and receive e-mail to the
Internet already. Same applies to NNTP, should also be handled by IIS's
NNTP service.

Now I'm really confused...are you telling me that I ordinarily don't need to
create connector under Connectors to handle SMTP mail? How then is SMTP
mail routed to and from the Internet?

thru the default smtp virtual server.

you can use smtp connector to specify different settings for outgoing mail,
EHLO versus HELO, queued for later delivery, message size limitations, etc.

The mail server timing out is expected as I have it up and down while
troubleshooting. As for the other warnings, I'll run them by my ISP and see
what they say.

Not if all you're trying to do is send mail in and out to one server. You
can use the additional SMTP connectors and virtual servers to do some
additional things, but if you're not trying to get "fancy", you're just
looking for the "basic package", you can let IIS's SMTP service send and
receive e-mail to and from the Internet. You might be trying to set E2K up
more like Exchange 5.5 than it needs to be.

Here's one way you can use the additional SMTP Connector:

Note: this is an example of a more "fancy" setup - it would also function
without using the additional SMTP Connector and Virtual Server.

Okay, but using one should not cause the problems I am having. I suppose I
could delete the connector but I don't see what in there would cause this
behaviour.

Kevin.
