M:\ Disappeared - Everything Fails

| My exchange server started failing...out of the blue.
I am getting all sorts of messages in the event veiwer. Specifically, I get
an 'OpenMsgStore' failed message, Event 9175.
The bulk of the research I have found shows this to be related a failure to
mount the mailbox store. When I look more closely, the M:\ logical drive is
not being created. How come the M:\ drive disappeared? This seems critical
to more than one feature. Is it? Can I manually create the M:\ drive?

| Hi Robert,
There are most likely some other events in the Application Log that will
indicate why the Exchange server is failing.
The M: drive is a virtual drive that only exists when the Information Store
databases are mounted. The M: drive missing is a symptom not the problem.
Typically it is recommended to not touch the M: drive unless you know
exactly what you are doing. To many things can get broken by scanning the M:
drive with Anti-Virus, backing up the M: drive and modifying permissions on
the M: drive can cause serious problems over time.
OK now that the M: drive warning is out of the way.
The Event ID 9175 is simply an indication that the System Attendant cannot
connect to the Information Store. If the Information Store is down then this
Evetn is expected. Try this. Clear and save off the existing Application log
file. Try to start the Information Store service and see what is logged in
the Application log if it fails to start. If it starts then try to mount the
Mailbox and Public Folder Store check for any new events from these
attempts. The Application Log usually hold the answer to Exchange Services
failing to start.
Post back the relevant errors/warnings and I'll see what I can tell you.

| Anything change recently on this server? What SPs for Exchange 2000 are you
running? Any backup utils/virus scanners accessing M?

| No, only the NetBackup. The server is running SP3 for Windows, and Exchange
SP3. AV is F-Secure who is scanning on mail-level, not file-level.
The F-Secure AV has bin on the server all the time it has been running.

| I'm having the same problem with my drive M:
disappearing. However, my event logs don't seem to give
any indication that something is wrong and my server seems
to be working fine.
