Author Outgoing emails "stuck" in queue

For the last week or so, outgoing emails are getting stuck in the SMTP
queues.

For example, I send an email to an account on AOL.....every so often (at
least once a day) the emails just hang up in the SMTP queue for aol.com.
There are also stuck emails for other outgoing domains. Incoming emails
don't seem to be affected.

It takes a re-boot to correct this and all is fine for a day or so then it
happens again.

I'm a novice at Exchange 2000 and really could use some help / direction on
investigating and solving this problem.

Thanks for any help,

Allan Lindsay

When the mails are stuck in the outbound queue for say aol.com, in Exchange
System Manager, right click on the queue, and go to properties. What reason
does it give for the queue to be in retry?

When the messages are stuck in the queue, are you still able to resolve
aol.com using nslookup?

Is there any warnings or errors in your event log?

Do you have antivirus software running on the exchange server? File based?
Or Exchange aware?

Thanks
Rob
