E2K SP3 still requires the /3GB switch ?
|
|
| Want To Know 2002-08-08, 11:23 am |
| My E2K server has 1GB RAM at the moment.
I'm going to upgrade the E2K SP2 to SP3 and at the same time upgrade the RAM
from 1GB to 2GB.
With the SP3, do I still have to put the /3GB switch in the boot.ini ?
I recall reading a post from here that with SP3, the /3GB switch is
redundant. Is it true ?

| If you're running W2k Advanced Server, then yes -- be sure you're running
with /3GB switch in BOOT.INI. If it's W2k Server, then putting in the /3GB
switch will only reduce the kernel-mode virtual memory, with no gain in
user-mode virtual memory. Take a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...b;en-us;Q266096
There are a bunch of virtual memory changes in E2k SP3 to reduce virtual
memory fragmentation, but you'll definitely still want to set the /3GB
switch on W2k Advanced Servers.

I don't know about the SP3 thing, but the /3GB switch should only be
used if you're running W2K Advanced Server. Do NOT use it if you're
only running W2K Server.

| We have an Exchange 2000 Cluster with, of course, Win2kAdv Server. This
morning we put the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file and we had some issues.
Services in cluster admin kept going offline and online and then the
information store dismounted. We couldn't mount it. We failed over to the
other node (which also had the /3GB switch) and it ran for a little but
finally died the same way as node 1. So to get things back, we just took
the switch off. Sure we get fragmentation errors in the event log but it's
working for now. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard

| What errors did you get in the app log, sys log, or cluster log while the
store was acting up?

| Well, you asked. I apologize ahead of time for the size of this post:
For starters I got 1003 Event ids - IISInfoCtrs source.
Unable to query the IIS Info service performance data. The error code
returned by the service is data DWORD 0.
Event ID 2002
The open procedure for service "RemoteAccess" in DLL
"C:\WINNT\System32\rasctrs.dll" has taken longer than the established wait
time to complete. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or
the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very
busy when this call was attempted.
After the Exchange services started, I get many of these:
Event 1003
Unable to query the W3SVC (HTTP) service performance data. The error code
returned by the service is data DWORD 0.
Then I start getting this:
Event 10006 - Source Microsoft Search
An error occurred during the online operation for instance <Exchange MS
Search Instance - (WNBEXCL01)>: 80004005 - Unspecified error
Once I got this "Information" type Event 9997, source MSExchangeMTA:
The description for Event ID ( 9997 ) in Source ( MSExchangeMTA ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following
information is part of the event: File:

ifwnt.c', line: 1720, MTAtid: 3, NTtid: 2760,
GetDiskFreeSpace() Returned Error: 21(0x00000015).
I notice my MTA when offline in the cluster.
A few Event 482 Source ESE:
Information Store (2564) An attempt to write to the file

If this error persists then the file may be damaged and may need to be
restored from a previous backup.

Event 492 Source ESE:

been halted due to a fatal error. No further updates are possible for the
databases that use this logfile sequence. Please correct the problem and
restart or restore from backup.
A few Event 481 Sourse ESE:

device is not ready. ". The read operation will fail with error -1022
(0xfffffc02). If this error persists then the file may be damaged and may
need to be restored from a previous backup.
Even 1159 Source MSExchangeIS
Database error Disk IO error occurred in function

and few more like that...
Event 1115 Source MSExchangeIS Mailbox:
Error 0xfffffbbe returned from closing database table, called from function
JTAB_BASE::EcCloseTable on table 2-26CE84.
I get a whole bunch of 1159, 482 and 481 errors. A minute later I get a
whole bunch of 1115 errors. Finally I get a message saying the Information
Store stopped. It seems to try to startup again and then a series of event
5007 source MSExchangeSA errors.
Once we took the /3GB off...we see none of these errors.
Thanks for your time...
