Like every one else I wanting to get certified so that I
can prepare for uncertainties ahead as well as wanting to
market myself as an independant consultant one day when
the ITS drought picks up. Are employers really placing
value on this certification? What other credentials are
employers looking for in a consultant? I am sure a degree
and some experience helps? Anything else?

Not really.

Business knowledge. Simply understanding how to write a bit of code,
do bit of analysis etc is not enough. A company would be mad to hire a
consultant who did not understand the nature of that company's
business.

A degree counts only when you looking to enter in to the profession.
After that companies look solely for experience, both within the
business and technical they work with.

> Anything else?

Be prepared to travel and move around.
