| Mmmm...not yet. Still waiting.
I noticed on the VSLive site the announcement about
taking .NET exams at half price, except 70-300:
"MCSD attendees can take the new exam 70-300: Analyzing
Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution
Architectures onsite at VSLive! at no cost!"
At no cost? Will this be like a "beta 2"? Or will it be
the live version?

| 70-xxx is live version and 71-xxx is beta version.
So it must be a live version.

| Yes, I know. But when I received my beta invitations,
they always referred to the exams as 70-xxx. And on the
Prep guide page on /traincert/, it's referred to as 70-300.
The prep guide still says "expected to be released in its
live version by February 2003", so no firm date as to
general release. But the VSLive site says "...when
Microsoft launches the new Microsoft Certified Solution
Developer (MCSD) for Microsoft .NET certification..." so
I'm assuming also that all of the exams (including -300)
will be live at that point. Or, at least, that the
version that VSLive attendees take will be the live
version.
So it all boils down to M$'s definition of "live". Is it
live when the first person takes the exam in it's live
version? (Like at VSLive.) Or is it when it's available
for the general public? (Schedulable through Prometric or
VUE.)
In the meantime....

Mike,
Wonder no more, the 70-300 exam offered at VSLive! will be the live exam and
it will be offered at no cost.
I'll be at VSLive! in the testing center for most of the conference if
anyone wants to come by. Hopefully those of you who took the beta exam will
have your scores before VSLive! so you'll know whether you need to retake
the exam.

| Alice,
Your killing us!!! ;-)
Will it be today or is someone putting in overtime? Can it be too risky for
us to know at this point?

I don't think Alice or anyone at MS knows exactly when the info will get to
us. Here's my understanding of the process:
1. Exam is open for beta testing
2. VUE and prometric send beta test results to MS. They are unable to
properly score the exams at this point, since aside from probably not even
knowing which answers are correct, they definitely don't know which
questions will count and what the required score will be.
3. MS uses the beta test results to eliminate statistically invalid
questions.
4. MS determines the passing score
5. MS sends VUE and Prometric two pieces of information: the passing score,
and a list of the questions from the beta that should be scored.
6. VUE and Prometric use this data to 'rescore' all of the beta test
results.
7. VUE and Prometric snail mail final results to all beta testers
8. VUE and Prometric send MS the rescored results
9. As they arrive, MS applies these results to online transcripts. Even live
exam turnaround time for transcript updates varies, and beta updates do as
well. And the results for past betas have definitely trickled in, over at
least several days.
10. MS determines new certifications earned. Online transcripts usually
reflect new exams before certfications that are logically simultaneous, so
this is clearly a separate process.
Just in case any of you are new to the internet, there are almost definitely
major omissions and errors in that list. It's mostly my inferences from
taking a half dozen or so beta exams, and then obsessively trying to get
results asap. But I'm pretty sure that's the basic flow.
It sounds to me like step 5 is complete, and obviously the progress of steps
6-8 are entirely out of Microsoft's hands. There have apparently been snags
with several recent betas in those areas too, so there's really no telling
if it'll run as smoothly as it should this time.
But, yeah, it's killing me too. I'm glad I'll be done with betas for a while
after this one.
