70-300 Exam SOS !!!

Hi all,
Well, if you ask me why did I select this exam in
particular, there are specific reasons for me targeting
this paper.
My employer beleives that I have all the required
Microsoft Expertise (been in the company's Enterprise Web
applications Team for more than 2 years) and since I'm
doing some kind of architechting consultancy for them
right now, it would be better for me to get an MCP
specific to .NET architecture.
And also, since I have fairly good amount of knowledge
(and not experience) in Requirements Engineering, Req.
Mgt, Business case modelling and stuff, I personally
thought I'd go for it.
I understand that If I have to clear this paper, the
following will be the key skill areas that I should take
care of (as outlined in the Microsoft 70-300 page)
1. MSF Model
2. Object Role Modelling (ORM)
3. Database Modelling
4. Other Standards and Practises
Technically speaking, I'm also conversant in C#, ASP.NET
and Web services. So just thought let me do the top-down
approach for getting an MCSD.NET (First, a 70-300 followed
by 70-315, 70-316, 70-320 and 70-229)
Right now, I'm referring to all of MSDN and other
Microsoft sites only. Also Tim's page on 70-300 sheds more
insight too (www.codeclinic.com/70-300skills.htm)
If you can recommend me of any specific books on this I
would be very much grateful. My goal is to be called a MS
S/W architect guy.
So long, I've never really cared to appear for an MCP. But
now, its high time for me to get an MCSD since I'm gonna
be hired for our parent company in the US.
So, pls advise me if my focus is right and also pls guide
me in this regard.
If possible mail me at imkumar@protechmail.com
Waiting for your valuable inputs,
Thanks and regards,
Mohan Kumar J.

I would say that you don't need 70-300 unless you want to
be a sw architect.
You can take either 70-315 or 70-316 and 70-320, more one
exam about SQL
Server (70-229) and you get MCAD...

| I'm preparing for this exam also.
The material I'm using is:
Books:
- UML Distilled: A Brief Guide to the Standard Object Modeling Language
(2nd Edition) (ISBN 020165783X)
- The Unified Modeling Language User Guide (ISBN 0201571684)
- .NET Enterprise Development in C#: From Design to Deployment (ISBN
1861005911)
- Information Modeling and Relational Databases: From Conceptual Analysis
to Logical Design (ISBN 1558606726)
MOC:
- 1846: Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) Essentials
- 2710: Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution
Architectures
- 2090: Modeling Business Requirements to Create a Database Using Microsoft
Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect
I'm also using many PDF documents downloaded from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/practices/.
On MSDN Library I found many articles that are helpful, so, it's worth of
reading.
I have also experience as software engineer/architect, doing it to many big
customers here in Italy.
Maybe you wont need all this material to prepare for the exam, but as I work
with that, for me it prepares also to the real life working... :-)
Good luck with the exam and your new job.
Best regards,
Paulo

| Thanks for the link. Some nice material there.
How did you like the "NET Enterprise Development in C#: From Design to
Deployment " book??
It sounds like a good one to read.
Thanks,
Glenn

I participated in the 71-300 beta. If I remember
correctly, there was no UML, ORM was touched upon very
lightly. The first few chapters of Information Modeling
and Relational Databases: From Conceptual Analysis
to Logical Design should be more than enough for ORM.
Prepare on how to architect Media Applications and the
Microsoft Technology and products that will help you in
designing Media Apps.
Thanks,
Sridhar Krishnaswamy, PMP

| I participated too in 71-300 and I remember the exact things: no UML and a
just little ORM.
It does not mean that UML should be avoided. Actually I'm sorry MS does not
use more UML.
I plan to take the IBM 486 exam - UML and Design Patterns.

| Yeah. It's a nice book. When you learn C# you get a lot of concepts, and
this book helps you to see these concepts on the practice.
It's not good as a hands-on, but is worth reading anyway.
Cheers,

| I plan to take this IBM exam too.
Anyway, I was not aware that wasn't UML on the exam (I can't understand
why), but this knowledge is useful for me on my work, so, not time lost...
:-)
Cheers,

| Yes, UML is very useful for a company that wants a good system for software
development but many companies and many managers still develop software
without opening a book. That's why we still see lots of failed projects.
As a C++ developer I studied lots of C++ books to improve my code and become
a better developer. Why is it so hard for a manager to study how the
software development should be, learn from these books and avoid making
stupid mistakes?

| I think IBM 486 is one of the best and challenging exams I
have ever taken, towards getting my Certified Enterprise
Developer for Websphere certification. It has been a
couple of years, I am not sure if the exam has changed.
The material I used for preparing was UML Distilled, and
Applying UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-
Oriented Analysis and Design by Craig Larman. I used the
first edition of this book. Since then there has been a
second edition. This is a superb book anyway to keep.
Thanks,
Sridhar.

| I just took and passed the IBM 486 exam. This exam is what
70-300 should have been!
I liked this exam a lot. Much of the exam deals with the
Object-oriented design process, not the specifics of the
UML notation. Head on over to www.objectsbydesign.com for
some good information on how to study for the exam. Also,
don't forget to take IBM's ICE practice exam for this test.

I was planing to take 486 for a while but 71-300 came and other things also

| I bought both books to study for the 486 exams but I only had time to walk
through the UML Distilled but not the other one. 486 maight be the only OBM
exam I am inteerested in because it is about UML. I only use MS platforms.
