Although I'm pushing 40 I've only been programming for a
few years. I'd started with VB6 and was working towards a
MCSD when the new .NET platform rolled out. Should I
continue my pursuit of a MCSD using 6.0 or abandon it and
start towards .NET? Is the MCSD for 6.0 even a valid cert.
anymore? Also, does anyone know if Microsoft plans on
coming out with a new version of the Mastering tutorial
series?

There is no black and white answer to this. It really depends on YOU.

..NET is really the "way to go", however, you may have other issues. The VS6
MCSD will be good for years to come and having any MCSD is better than none.
Many employers don't even know the difference between the two. If you are
well on your way with the MCSD and you want something soon and the $125 per
exam is not a bank buster for you, then I would consider completing VS6 MCSD
then moving on to MCSD.NET.

Most likely, if you come from a VB background, the transition to VB.NET will
be significant and it will take months before you are ready to take the
exams. There is a bit of a learning curve. If you have worked with Java or
to a lesser extent C++, it may not be so bad.

Also keep in mind that if you do get your MCSD, you may be eligible for a
voucher for 70-300, the Architectures exam for .NET. I think you have to
use it by August or September though.

You also may want to be sure to take 70-229 as your elective for MCSD so you
can apply it toward your .NET certification if you do choose the MCSD-first
path.

I would look at doing both.

VS98 apps will be around for a long time. Companies are not going to
simply re-write the app just because of dot net. Any that do, without
a good business case for doing so, have more money than sense!
