Author MCSD or MCSD.NET

Hi, I am a VB 6 developer for 2 years and have been
recently prepared the MCSD exam by reading some books and
taking some demo tests. I am petty new to .NET and just
started writing programs in VB.NET.

I don't know whether I should take MCSD or .NET version.
For MCSD I may start the exam in two months but for .NET,
mayby at least in a year. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lei

I would let cost be the determining factor: if you don't mind spending the
required amount for MCSD certification, then spending again for MCSD.NET
certification (or if it's covered by your company), then go ahead, MCSD
certification is still very valuable, and it's usefulness won't soon be done
away with.

However, if cost is a determining factor, I would wait and get MCSD.NET
certification. Many corporations are currently looking for .NET talent, and
MCSD.NET certification is definitely a huge plus, especially given current
market conditions.

Back up a second. Why are you interested in a cert?

If your current employer is big on certs, and would like you to be
certified, then the non-dotnet-MCSD might be worth the effort. However it
will have a much shorter lifespan in the marketplace than the dotnet-MCSD
and even that will probably be superseded in a year or two. And I haven't
found that many employers that care about the MCSD at all, much less whether
or not it is "dotnetted".

If you're doing this completely on speculation - - meaning you have no clear
requirement for a certification from a current or potential employer, then
I'd go with the dotnet studies because whatever value it brings will last
longer in the marketplace.
