I've recently started with my MCSD and would like to know
where I can get hold of BETA exams for studying purposes.
Are they freely available on the net or do I have to go to
a testing centre?

You really can't get them either way. MS offers beta exams by invitation for
a limited time only, and it doesn't seem that there will be any more MCSD
related beta exams in the near future.

If you're looking for practice questions to get an idea about what the exams
are like, there are many commercial providers, and I believe they all have
free demo samples. Try www.transcender.com, www.measureup.com,
www.selftestsoftware.com.
