Author I took (and failed) the 70-300 exam today

I was pretty confident going into the 70-300 exam today. After taking and
passing the following exams on the first attempt I was pretty sure this one
would be no different: 70-229, 70-218, 70-320, 70-228, 70-316, 70-210,
70-315, and 70-215.

I was wrong :-(. When I was taking it I found it more difficult than
expected but still felt I was doing well enough to pass.

Here are the things that I studied in preparation:

1. http://codeclinic.com/70-300skills.htm (including all links, Yes, I
printed and read them all)
2. MOC: Modeling Business Requirements to Create a Database Using Microsoft
Visual Studio.Net Enterprise Architect (2090A)
3. MeasureUp (70-300) Practice exam. I was able to pass with 100%

Here are my comments on each of these items I studied.

1. This was probably the best resource. It came closest to providing
information that was usefull in the exam. It was definitely a good start
but not adequate to pass the exam (at least for me).
2. This book was not a bad introduction to ORM but absolutely useless on
the exam.
3. The MeasureUp practice exam did not even come close to covering all the
concepts on the real exam (maybe 5%). Even worse it gave me a false sense
of security because they claim that you should be prepared for the real exam
after passing theirs with 100% (which I did).

So, now I'm completely lost. I have no idea how close I came to passing the
exam. I have studied all the resources I could come up with. My first
instinct is to study some more and go for a second try fairly soon (within a
few days). Another part of me feels like holding off a few months to see
what other resources become available.

I'm not sure what I'll do. I hope my posting this will encourage others to
go into this exam more prepared than I did.

Eric:

Sorry that you didn't make it-you seems to be well prepared.

Anyone passed the live the 70-300 exam today? Any more comment on the live
exam?

Thanks for the great feedback on the exam, and I'm sorry you've got to try
again. I know the scoreless policy makes when to retake a tough call. I'd
probably recommend waiting long enough so that you can at least briefly take
your mind off it completely. Then you should probably trust your instincts
on when to retake.

You said you found it more difficult than you expected - were there any
topics that stumped you, or did you just find lots of it ambiguous? In some
ways, recognizing that it was a challenge is encouraging. I think it would
be worse to have found it a breeze and then have no idea where you possibly
could have had any difficulty. But after the Post Exam Stress Disorder wears
off, I usually find myself recalling parts of the exam vividly. Ideally,
before you retake, you'll find something that in retrospect you're sure you
should have answered differently or you'd like to read up on for a few
hours. Your retake probably won't be identical to the first exam, but it
will certainly be similar and I bet there will be at least some repeated
questions. In the likely event that you see repeated case studies, try to
take the time to reread through those at least once. You may find that
'fresh eyes' will see something you overlooked the first time, and you
shouldn't have any need to rush yourself.

It's only failure if you give up, so I hope you do give it another shot when
you feel ready.

Well, if you simply read the printed MOC, you may be missing out on what a
typical course would offer. A good instructor should add a great deal,
though of course that will vary with different instructors. But MOC is more
like a play than a novel, it's not intended to be delivered in written form.
The writers assume the work is incomplete and will be supplemented by
performers.

Sorry you failed.

I was going to take the exam (I failed the beta) again this week, but as the
company will not pay because they, like so many others don't value the
exams, I'll wait and do it for free in March. Had I already not got the
other four exams for mcsd.net, I don't think I would bother; in any case
this will be the last exam I take (unless an employer pays - fat chance!) .
After seven years of being an mcsd, there is simply not the reward for
taking the time, effort and expense (£100 an exam now!!) to achieve
certification.

Good luck when you do the exam again and thanks for the feedback.

I took 70-300 today (2/11) and passed. I actually found that it was a
pretty easy exam, despite no preparation for it.

I've been using VS.NET since beta, and have been developing system
architecures for awhile ... I think this exam is much easier to pass if you
have real working knowledge, rather than studying from books and texts.

Good luck for those of you taking it in the future!
