Hell Mean, I'm knackered from reading that, but it was worth it, but what
pisses me off is in the small village where I live that house would cost
between £150k to £200k to buy and he's wrecked it. lol
But as an English man I have to ask a couple of questionsa about you good
folk
1. What the hell is a 'Red Neck'?.
2. Who the is John Doe?
3. Why on earth do you put mail boxes at the end of your garden?, here we
have letter boxes in our front door?
Crucial questions I think you will agree :-)

I'm not sure of the etymology of the word, but it's basically a hillbilly, a
"good ole' boy"
The term has a bit to do with the fact that they usually work outdoors, and
tend to get sunburned necks...

That's just a standard "unknown" name. Personally, I prefer "John D'oh!"

There was a time when mail was delivered by a pedestrian carrier, and it
might still be in some cases. Most mail delivery here is from truck, so
your mailbox needs to be right next to the road.

Nah!, I honestly think you Americans are a top lot. Apart from a few you
seem to be a nation who likes to see other people do well which I really
admire. Where as in this country, we (not me) seem to want to build people
up just so we can knock them down again.
I was going to hazard a guess at Redneck being like those guys from the

Depends on the locality and the 'urban' vs 'rural' nature of the
community. Around here (eastern PA, USA) a kind of rule of thumb is that
if you have a grass yard in front of your house, then you will likely
have a mailbox near the curb. If you don't have enough property to have
a grass yard, then you will likely get the mail delivery to your door.
Funny how some things, like mailboxes, that we take for granted as a
common occurrence here in the states are an unknown idea overseas.

That's an example, however I wanted to add that that's also an extreme.
Many Americans proudly call themselves rednecks. Being a redneck is NOT
necessarily a bad thing, but like many labels, it can be mis-used. Jeff
Foxworthy is a comedian whose made his entire routine out of "You might be a
redneck if..." line of jokes. He even had his own short-lived sitcom a few
years back.

Here, in the People's Republic of California, mailboxes are now "community"
mailboxes in which all the mailboxes for the street are in one large box
located in front of one person's house.

| When I visited Bora Bora I noticed their peculiar mail boxes.
They were skinny and a couple of feet long, all placed on a post.
They were too skinny to be mail boxes but all of the houses had them.
When I asked what they were, I was told that the people walk to town to pick
up their mail.
The skinny mail boxes were for french bread delivery, which was delivered
daily.

Ahhh, yes. Forgot about those. In some of the newer housing developments
around here that kind of community mail center is becoming more popular.
Perhaps only popular for the mail carrier, though.

Actually, that IS a common occurrence here, and getting worse. The mail
that gets stolen, however, is not incoming mail, as you'd suspect, it's
outgoing mail! For this reason, we usually mail our bills by driving to the
post office.
The reason outgoing mail gets stolen is that some unscrupulous people have
discovered a cheap scheme called "check washing" where using certain
chemicals, they can effectively remove written ink from a check, then change
the payee and/or amounts. Saw this on TV a year or three ago. Apparently
the banking industry did take some steps in making safer "unwashable"
checks, so this might be rarer today.

I guess they figure that by charging more and more to mail a letter that

Not really, each of the boxes are locked. The postman has the master
key. Kinda like the PO Box type, just on a smaller scale.
I suppose that if your neighbors were really nosy they could be waiting
at the box at the same time the postman arrives and watch what mail he
puts into which box. That behavior is usually reserved for senior
citizens, though.

It just doesn't get any better than Cool Hand Luke! I never tire of that
movie. If you don't like it, you spend a night in the box!
As Good As It Gets was also good, but Nicholson carried the movie,
although Helen Hunt's wet t-shirt scene was good on the eyes. :-)
I thought that recently Spider-Man was quite good, as well as A
Beautiful Mind. Sum Of All Fears was ok, but I'm getting tired of Jack
Ryan changing his look, age, military experience, etc.

I would love to some good films with real substance like that but it is
easier said than done here, half the battle is getting someone to volunteer
to watch stuff like that with me. Basically my friends will not watch

Here's one for the story books:
A woman who worked in the same department as me has had an interesting
life. Let's call her Mary.
Mary was married twice, but never divorced. Both husbands committed
suicide! Mary then became a lesbian for a while, but when Mary received
some distressing news, she went to talk to her next door neighbor (a
male) for comforting. They had sex and Mary got pregnant. They decided
to marry, Mary leaving her lesbian lover behind, but then Mary lost the
baby. They then decided that they did want to have a baby, but
apparently was unable for whatever reason, so Mary investigated having
eggs from her adult daughter (Mary had children from the previous two
marriages) impregnated by her husband (the daughter's step father) and
then Mary would carry the baby to term.
Now, if you were able to understand all this...she is one definitely
messed up lady!
