Where can I obtain materials for study?
|
|
| Seeking Certification 2002-12-29, 8:23 pm |
| Does anyone know how to get a study kit for the MCSD?
Has anyone here passed the first MCSD exam that could
offer some idea about the best way to study for this?
Should I take a class or is it possible to study from the
book and do just fine?
I already have the MCAD/MCSD Devolping Web Applications
with VB.net and C#.net. Is this sufficient?
Any suggestions would be great!!
Thanks to all.

| That is what I used and I consider it very good. I programmed C# in my job
for two years before I read that book to prepare for the test, however.
The book is very pointed at test preparation and is very good at that. It
is not a great book for learning C# and .NET, however.

What do you mean 'first mcsd exam'? The .net mcsd track is the forth
mcsd track to be introduced, At present there are no (outside
microsoft) .net mcsd's, as the main core exam has yet to be released
and the results of the beta exam have yet to be released.

If your employer will pay for the course, then do a course, but make
sure it's from a reputable company first. You will gain a lot from a
good lecturer, however you can't beat real hands on experience.

No, it is full of errors and does not cover all you need to know in
order to pass the exam.
>Any suggestions would be great!!
There are plenty of good books and web resources, search back through
this ng and you should find them.
Search the web for good resources, see the online book stores for
reviews of the many .net books, go to your local book store and read a
chapter or two and see what you think, but avoid any books with
mcsd/mcad in the title.

Ok, maybe I am confused a bit. This is the site I was
looking at for .NET certification
http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/.../requirementsdo
tnet.asp
Is this not what I should be looking at? From what I was
understanding I should be taking 70-305 as my first test
(since I will be using VB). Should I be starting
somewhere else for certification. (I do have experience
in programming although I am not great at it. My job is
Asst. Network Admin so I do not get a great deal of hands
on except at home.
Thanks

Yes this lists the requirements for the .net mcsd track.

You can take the required tests in any order you like.

I know everyone has to start somewhere, but the point I always make to
people who wish to enter the profession is that the process of
developing software consists of a great deal more than just writing
the code. It helps a great deal to understand what is actually
involved in the production of software. As a network admin, you will
understand the importance of planning roll outs, upgrades, maintenance
tasks etc, software development follows a similar pattern. You will
certainly need some understanding of the basics of a development
process in order to undertake the 70-300 core exam. There are a number
of good books (check your local library) which explains the software
development cycle.
The mcsd .net exams, other than 70-300, will simply test you on the
basic understanding of product and in no way encourage you to author
software in an efficient manner, however a prospective employer will!

| oops! I added a new post instead of a reply...
Could you suggest a couple of good books? The 70-305
lists ADO.NET step by step and ASP.NET step by step and
of course the MCAD/MCSD book.
Did you take the course or do it on your own?
How do you know which topics to study for the test? Is it
possible to get an idea of what to study by looking at
practice exams?
Sorry I have so many questions you just seem like you
know what your talking about. I haven't met anyone else
yet that could answer questions I have.
Thanks agian.

Professional ado.net programming, wrox press. The examples are mainly
in c#, but the concepts and approaches still apply to vb.net.
>Did you take the course or do it on your own?
Could not afford to take any course. My understanding comes from many
years of database (both relational and others) design/development, and
attending or viewing seminars, white papers, msdn and building demo
systems.
>How do you know which topics to study for the test?
You don't, all you have is the prep guide, which you have already
seen.
>Is it

I understand that MS press book I told you was no good (MCAD/MCSD
Devolving Web Applications) does have a good practice exam supplied
with it.

Look though this ng, you will find that most (if not all) of your
questions have already been asked and answered. Tip connect direct to
news.microsoft.com rather than through your isp, as the thread
retention period is far longer.

That means there aren't even any .Net MCSDs inside Microsoft either. Once
the beta results are released, they may be able to get results a few days
ahead of us civilians, but there's no special shortcut available to them.

This is correct and was what I meant. Given that the results for
71-300 should be released within the next 2-4 week. There *may* be
people who know already.
A few people I knew worked on product support [for ms] were told
several days before the results of the 70-028 beta were issued. What
purpose that achieved, I don't know (or care).
