Each exam cost $125. Plus they update the exam often.

If each MCP only takes one exam per year, that's $100,000,000 for MSFT.

This is a good revenue / cash cow for MSFT.

I don't have any inside info, but your 'business model' is very
oversimplified.

MS doesn't get $125 per exam. If you've taken any, you may notice that your
entire payment went to someone else. MS gets a portion, but in the US there
are also 2 other slices for the test center itself and the test provider
company. There are also many exams delivered for less than $125 - that's
about the highest price (currency fluctuations probably move some regions
slightly higher once in a while). But in many parts of the world, the
standard price is significantly less. Beta exams are free. MCTs get a 40%
discount.

Many MCPs have not taken any exams in a long time.

Developing and providing the exams also entails significant costs.

I imagine they do turn a profit on the exams, but not nearly as much as you
speculate.

You can't base how much Microsoft is making in offering exams by calculating
MCPs * $125. You need to ask many other questions such as:
How many employees does Microsoft have working in the training and
certification group?
How much does the test center receive for delivering the exam?
How much does VUE/Prometric get per exam?

I'm sure that the certfication program is profitable (MSFT does not exist to
benefit society, but to make money), but all factors should be considered
when speculating how much.
