Author Is MS Press self-paced kit good prep for exam 70-316

Hi folks,

I've picked up a copy of the MS Press book and find it very simple. It
seems to me that the issues it discusses are very general to OOP and there
are only a few new .Net concepts in the book. I haven't opened the CD pouch
with the tutor exam yet and am wondering whether I should bother? Is the
real life exam anywhere near as simple as this book makes it out to be?
Will I get good training from the CD? Would I be better off with the
Transcenders kit? or just go for the exam?

Thanks,
John

If you look through this group, you should find some comments about
the practice exam included with that 'training guide'. From what I've
read the comments are favorable, stating the exam is quite hard (but
fair) although no answers are given.

If you have money to burn, get Transcender and use it to reference the
msdn.

If you feel confident, just take the exam. You don't know what score
you get so there is no point 'over studying' simply to pass the exam,
there are plenty of other topics not covered on the exam to worry
about.

I'd say no. But there is unfortunatly no one better. MS Press books together
with transcender tests helped me pass 8 tests without failing once. I think
the combinatin is unbeatable.

70-306 is in my oppinion the easiest of the .net exams, and I suppose that
70-316 is just as easy.

Thanks Alan and Anders.

I took the plunge and opened the envelope in the book. I sat down and tried
the test. It's got a lot of SQL in it which is not my area of expertise. I
also realize that the test covers a lot of the new features of dotNet like
versionability, deployment and security. Now I know that I need to work
through the book to understand these features. It's not just a test of the
C# language and taking the test gave me a roadmap to follow.

Does Transcenders qualify as a braindump? I'm new here and trying to figure
out what is considered cheating and what is smart studying. I'm getting the
impression that the Transcenders product offers more than just answers;
somehow it sends me to the correct topics in my MSDN?

How tough is the "Web Applications for dotNet"?

In your experience, have you seen any good bias towards developers who have
written and passed these tests? I'm in Montreal, Canada and most of my
colleagues have no clue that these exist.

Thanks,
John

In my opinion Transcender is not a braindump. I'm sure some people say it
is, but I think that the questions are not good enough to make You pass
without understanding them. What really makes them useful are the well
written explanations and the refs to MSDN.

For me, it was tough. I was really nervous before pressing the exit button.
70-320 was even worse and 70-306 was easier.

About bias, I'm still waiting...

As per the exam prep guide - A lot of ado.net, deployment with
sprinklings of security for good measure

Alan, what is the "exam prep guide" that you mention?

Thanks Anders.

In the meantime I found an old thread between Alan, Mat and Sorai. I'm
starting to understand the differences between 'products' available.

It's just the list of topics covered in the exam.
