MCAD/MCSD Self Study - Software Needed?

| I'm getting ready to begin self-study for MCAD (first) and MCSD.NET
(ultimately) certification. The bulk of my preparation will be done at home.
If I intend to concentrate on VB.NET, can I purchase VB.NET and adequately
prepare, or do I really need VS.NET?
Many thanks in advance,
Ken

| VB.NET is just a language used in VS.NET. You can't purchase VB.NET
separately. You need to purchase VS.NET to learn different types of
applications (e.g. Windows app, ASP.NET app, Windows Service, etc) written
in VB.NET.

| You should probably purchase the MSDN Universal Edition, if you're really going
for MCSD. At the least you would need VS.NET Enterprise Architect.

| So I understand the MS press book's for 305/315 & 306/316 come with a
time limited version of vs.net pro. As I understand from comments made
about those books, they are poor. However it will be cheaper than
buying msdn (although if you can afford it, buy it, as it represents
excellent value for money).
You do not need the 'Enterprise Architect' edition to pass 305 and 306
exams, however in the real world this is what will be used for serious
real world .net developments (as well as other 3rd party tools).

| Ken,
One suggestion, which depends on your budget..... For the last few years, I
have been working independently and have found having an MSDN Universal
subscription extremely helpful, if not essential, for work as well as for
test preparation, which I have also been doing. Biggest problem is the
price (> $2K), however, for each of the last three years, I have gotten the
subscription for under $1K at eBay! Totally legitimate, they give you the
order number and you register through MS. Pretty damn good deal if you ask
me! And it includes VS.NET enterprise architect. Just go to eBay and
search for "msdn universal". Hope that helps.

I would say it is essential for those who freelance. How else would
one be able to develop software? Expect the client to provide the
tools!

That's a bargain and a half!

| I worked with a guy who told me how he got a MSDN Universal subscription for
$800. He signed up for a photography class at one of our community colleges
in the Dallas area, then asked the college bookstore to order the
subscription which he was able to purchase at the student rate of $800.
Pretty clever, eh? Actually, he completed the class and got the
subscription to boot!
