Hi guys, I have decided to switch to IT line(programming). I intend to take
MCSD exams. So can any MCPs here answer my questions?

1)In those exams, am I allowed to/or given a copy of MSDN to search?

2)What is the format of the exam?

3)and what's the time duration of the exam?

I have no friends in the IT line so I thought I could ask here. Thanks!

No. Given nothing.

the MCAD.NET exams are usually about 50-60 multiple choice questions

2 or 2.5 hours

So what's the passing criteria to get a cert? >50%?

Does the cert contain your grading as well?

usually around 75% - 80% +.. microsoft dont tell you the pass mark.

no grading - just pass or fail.

The exams measure "skills" and one of the skills is applying knowledge to
real-world situations. MSDN wouldn't be all that helpful in the exams I've
seen.

I disagree, least for vb/c# exams. If you had access to the msdn you
easily be able to find the answers, unless that it, you were a
complete dummy

Hi Alan,

In real-life you are allowed to find answers to your problems using the resources available, including MSDN, (E-)books and "Human Resources" (Colleques and online-communities) but it all depends on how fast you can find the right answer to your question.
I have taken exams with books where they test:
1. The skill to find the right answer ASAP from resources
2. The Skill tested was not to memorize the facts but how to apply them. (with those exams, you either could use everything on paper, or take a hand-written summary of 1 page with you)

The non-design tests (Design tests I've taken are 70-100, 71-300, 70-219, 70-221) is that it doesn't ask you many 'memorizing' questions, like some COMPTIA tests where you need to know the parameters of certain Commandline tools. It will ask you things tha
t you ought to know (almost by heart)
So while it is not like the Design Tests (where I think number 2 fully applies) it is a mix between knowing facts and knowing how to apply them.
It would be nice have the Non-human resources available but at that time, but people who can read fast and search fast will have extra advantages. The test should not become something that will test #1. For myself, it would be an advantage. Some things (li
ke all posibble (DSN) ConnectionStrings) are for me quicker to find than to memorize all of them.
The time for the exam should be at such a length that you would be in trouble if you need to find all the answers in the Resources. But I think it would be a problem to find that right amount of time, also when you know Persons that can't take the exam in
their first language get 30 minutes extra.
And I also think that some testcenters will be in trouble to give you MSDN access on your test-computer.

But there is no way that an Test can mimic real-world situations, unless you may contact your favourite Guru during the test <s>
