Howdy folks.

I'm just wondering if anybody has any more feedback on 70-320. I
appreciate all that you've posted on this board. I'm heading into my
final few days of study before I sit this one. Things are getting
crazy! Whew. I'm not used to studying without Transcender or the MS
study guide - this is my first shot at an exam without those tools.
It's crummy (or I'm spoiled). Hey, at least I'll save an extra
$150-200 on this one...

Anybody want to share their passing (or failing) experiences?

I've been studying mostly MSDN links (thanks Tim) out the wazoo...

- Serviced Components (assemblies, strong names, etc.) and COM+
(transactions, queued components, pooling, etc.)
- .NET and COM interop (this one has been pretty tough finding
suitable material)
- XML Web Services (gotta love 'em)
- ADO.NET and XML (any ideas on specifics on this? I've been through
typed DataSets, the rest of it seems pretty similar to what we had on
70-316)
- .NET Remoting (this was a new topic for me too, and is pretty
complex)
- Testing and Debugging (mostly trace stuff, some config - SOAP
Extensions?)
- Windows Services (didn't get too much material on this one, but had
one good sample. InstallUtil.exe and OnStart, OnPause, OnContinue,
etc.)

One thing missing on your list is security. Like ADO.net, there's a lot of
overlap from the other MCAD exams, but the exams also go into great depth on
those topics. I'd spend any 'extra' time on those two topics.

And thanks for the extra link on COM interop - I'll try to update the page
this weekend.

I passed two weeks ago...the outline specified in the test description was
complete.

Make sure you understand the basics of remoting WELL. Understand the
difference between TCP and HTTP and remote invocation, etc.

Thanks everybody. If anything you all are making me feel a little
better about the material that I'm studying. I'm just having to work
samples for pretty much every document in MSDN.

Any of you ever used remoting in a production application? It sure is
interesting and all, but I'm not sure that I'd ever use it. Granted
from what I've read, they generally perform a little better than web
services. I'm just not sure when I'd give up a somewhat negligible
difference in performance for the flexibility of web services.

I guess when all this is done, I'll be one of those certified people
who actually KNOWS some of this stuff... because I had to write my own
book to study for this thing!

Thanks again - check back for my posted results by the middle of next
week...

I passed the test a few weeks ago and I highly recommend the MeasureUp
practice test - $53. The questions were very representative and had
excellent explainations of the correct and incorrect answers.

I use a lot of remoting, but my focus is n-tier apps. As
I see it Web Services are .NET Remoting, and vice-versa.
Certainly this is over simplified, but at thier heart, the
same principles apply. Different bat channel, different
bat formatter, same old story...

I guess the big difference, at least as far as the test was concerned,
was interoperability between different OS clients. Looks like
Remoting has to have a Windows client - from what I understand.
Whereas web services can have any HTTP-enabled client. I VAGUELY
remember something about determining which was best in specific
situations from the test.... But that's all I can say (NDA).

I'm working on a large, enterprise-class distributed internet app, and
we decided to use web services for it. Of course, our previous app
used web services and the SOAP toolkit - we preferred that over
standard VB6 COM. Sure was a lot easier than creating COM+ proxy
classes and registering/unregistering/re-registering DLLs all the
time.

Anyway, I may have the opportunity to use remoting in the
not-to-distant future. Sounds like fun...
