| Good suggestion, Richard.
One 'practical' project for most developers is a bug tracker. An app that
imports logs/stats from a game (say a Madden2003 or a FPS) and allows
charting or reports might be fun and handy too.

I used this book as well, and thought it was really good, although I
would advise printing out a copy of the errata first! ;-)
I supplemented the book with material from MSDN. That was enough to
get me through both VB exams first time round.
