For people starting fresh in MCSE, can they still start and proceed with the
MCSE 2K track or do they HAVE to do thr 2k3 track now?

You are still able to get your 2k certification separate from the 2k3
track, they are independent. However, once you have your MCSE for 2k all
you have to do to get your 2k3 certification is take two upgrade exams.
You can get more information from http://www.microsoft.com/mcse.

So, would you recommend the 2k track + 2 upgrade exams to get the 2K3 cert,
or to take the complete 2K3 track? i think the complete 2k3 track is harder.

Since you appear to not have taken either W2K or W2K3, is there some reason
you see one track as "harder" than the other? Up until a few months ago, MS
was touting them as equal. My observation has been that as far as
certification test go, it's "GIGO"...garbage in garbage out.... If you
really study and absorb not only the information, but also the theory and
techniques behind it....either cert will get you where you want to go-.
further along, down the road to functional competence.

As has often been stated in this forum, you should take the exam based on
the installed OS you are working with on a daily basis. If your install base
is mostly W2k, it would be reasonable to take the W2K exams, then upgrade.
If your environment is in the process of upgrading to W2K3 server and most
of the workstations are running or will be running XP/XP-Pro and you are
just starting your track, then it would seem to indicate a fresh start
toward W2K3 certifications.

Additionally, there is currently a large library of manuals, tests, hints
and archives on W2K. At present only a few books on 2003 are out and even
fewer are actually recommended as being helpful. In fact there are
differences between the OS's, but they are very similar too. Most of the
differences have less to do with administration or management...more to do
with added features and enhanced capabilities. As always, most installations
will "never" make use of many of the features. Personally, that is one of
the biggest complaints I hear, that it's too much, for the average company
....but not enough - meaning you have to step up to Enterprise server - for a
few of the goodies.
