Look there for starters but basically you need to participate in peer
support (newsgroups). If you show yourself to deserve it they will award it
to you. Aaron Bertrand might be able to give you more details but the best
bet is to pound away here (or in the DotNet enwsgroups) if that is what you
are after.

The MVP program looks for helpful posters who are often right and post
more answers than questions. Might be the first part you're found

Having been an MVP for 3 years or so...I got a nice cheap engraved
watch, while MS got three years of me providing free tech support for
IE and Windows. Of course, being in a very small town during that
time, where else but in Newsgroups would I have gotten exposed to
such a large and varied range of problems and solutions, not to
mention met lots of great folks? Money? I think I can safely say
that the experience gained helped me make a bit of that.

| Then you won't be nominated as a MVP. You probably won't become a
teacher, preacher or poet either. Hopefully, you won't be charged
with a felony either. But there's still a lot of things you can do,
so don't get discouraged.

Ouch!
Some people will work for money, some will work for stock options and
some will work for an MVP. All 3 kinds of people are useful to the
company that pays them.
The ones that work only for money always know exactly what they're worth
at the moment. In today's economic climate, the ones that work for stock
options may be envying the ones that work for an MVP!-))
The MVPs are the very salt of the earth - they are definitely good guys.
We can't be so sure about the others.
Good Luck,

| I don't want to be nominated as a MVP. I've written 1000's and 1000's of
pages of poetry. Two years ago I e-mailed Randy Birch who I think is an MVP
or at least is linked into www.mvps.org about of couple of bugs in his code
and how top fix them. He never acknowledged this. I'm not so worried about
that but one of the code samples kept topping the week's most popular
download listing so 1000's of people were downloading fatally flawed code
and he never did a thing about it. Both fixes were easy and I explained
exactly what was wrong & how to fix. So please don't preach to me!
Furthermore, I don't have a criminal record, have never had a criminal
record, and at this rate never will.

| The irony is that Microsoft are motivated primarily by money. Sure they do
this or that charitable action so not to lose public face. I'd like to see
MVP awards where the winners get handed a wad of cash instead of - and I
quote - 'a cheap wrist watch'.

The site contents give a pretty good indication of where my interests lie. I

Sorry to hear about that.
I just wanted to point out that even financial "success" (here, the
stock options that Microsoft employees have) can sometimes be an
obligation too. Having no job means that you are at least free to seek
another job. So who knows what the future holds.
Unemployment also means you are free to pursue your interests: Perl,
Apache, Representational State architectures for web services (REST),
whatever you wish. So take advantage of the freedom while you still have
it. Remember
"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the
grave with the song still in them."

ICBW, but I'd also suspect that most MVPs don't view the award as matter
of "winning", more as recognition of their help and dedication.

I participated in a roundtable discussion concerning the MVP program.
The majority of those participating said they started hanging out in
newsgroups in order to learn new things or to broaden their experience
by solving problems beyond what they would run into at their jobs. The
MVP award was a byproduct of their self-paced learning programs. It's
certainly true for me.

It's an honor. You don't compete to get Knighted, and you get darned
little more than a title and some paperwork to back it up.
I'd venture to guess that the MVP's would all be providing the same
support even if Microsoft never acknowledged their existence. An MVP
isn't "pay" for doing the job, it's a warm fuzzy. And for some of us,
that's far better than cash.
Plus you get a cool tote bag.

That's too bad. Though I've often found that people who have no money
and are out of work could solve these issues with a simple change in
priorities, I'll assume that's not your case. But just because you're
broke and miserable and wouldn't lift a finger to help someone unless
you were appropriately compensated, that doesn't mean the rest of us
share your philosophy.

Your attitude isn't wrong, it's just wrong for me. If it works for
you, then you have my best hopes that you return to a life of
prosperity as expediently as possible.

What should I be prioritising? Getting a job? I'll assume that is the case.
Thanks for the tip I have a job interview this morning.

Since when was that my philosophy? What kind of wretched philosophy is that
anyway? If I subscribed to it would I gleefully tell everyone about it?

| Thank you Michael. I had a brief run in with Perl a few years back but
didn't pursue. Where you hit the nail on the head is when you state that I
may pursue my interests. Though pursued at considerable expense I am
better for it and I have thought much about where I want to go in the
future.Probably my exile is at least (arguably) in part self-imposed but I
will look back at this time with a deep satisfaction even though difficult
and unrounded.
