Except ado.net was not around in 1998, when the exam was being
developed.

One example would be If you were enhancing an existing system that
used, say RDO. You may not want to introduce ado into application or
convert the existing DALC's to use ADO as this would increase
maintenance overhead and increase costs which one would expect, reduce
the TCO of the enhancement.

True, but it is still an important issue.

I don't seem to recall any question on the exam that dealt specifically with
ADO or RDO. When I took this exam, it was the newer version with all the
funky drag-and-drop functionality and requirements analysis questions. I
think there were only 10 questions total and it took me the better part of
an hour to answer them.

To attempt to answer your question, I would have to say that you should use
ADO whenever possible, especially in new development. If you have an
existing application that uses RDO, keep using it. Microsoft has already
said that support for DAO is gone. I can't recall if they included RDO in
that statement or not.
