this is my favorite.
==
''Are there troubles? Is the workforce being globalized? Yes,'' says
Challenger. ''Will that put downward pressure on wages? Maybe. That's a
more realistic concern than to think that such a huge chunk of IT jobs will
disappear in short order.
''Is there demand for IT workers? Absolutely,'' he adds. ''That continues
to go on in all kinds of companies.''
==
i guess i agree with Challenger. There is a demand for IT workers if you
want to work for "minimum wage".
All you new IT people at the 4 week bootcamps, make sure you quizz the
sales guy about how this is going to effect that $50,000 right out of
bootcamp you were promised once you pass the MCSE exams.

There are certainly enough "offshoring" cheerleaders who cite the
various & sundry economic benefits, but the naysayers seem particularly
nonspecific in their criticisms.
What I really wonder is why some wonky type hasn't done a clear-eyed
analysis of the potential effects of political instability in either
India or China? Neither is much of a stretch these days. If the
Islamo-fascists bump off Musharraf in Pakistan, he will be replaced by a
fundamentalist who will be openly antagonistic, if not aggressive,
towards India, and both countries have The Bomb. If Taiwan renews its
separitist rhetoric, it wouldn't be long before China lowers the boom.
I wonder what the economic impact of having one's back-office operations
in a war zone is? Hmmmm...

Or your crucial infrastruture in the hands of an islamic fundamentalist
regime?
How about privacy issues? Medical records and diagnosis done overseas.
Tax returns and corporate bookeeping? Design and engineering?
Shudder!

Even better, PG&E (the California electric utility) is sending its grid
resdesign and drafting work to Thailand:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?
file=/chronicle/archive/2003/11/05/BUGV72QC5P1.DTL
This is especially ironic as many municipal utilities won't let you see
drawings of the water and gas lines in your own front yard, owing to
ficticious security concerns or USA-PATRIOT Act provisions.
In my own back yard is more silliness. One of the TV stations put a
weather-cam on top of a general aviation hangar at the local airport.
The airport director is having a fit because "bad people in Afghanistan
or Iraq" can see operations at the airport. Ummm, a grainy view of one
part of the apron, perhaps. I guess they can't get flight information
from Expedia, Orbitz, et cetera, in Iraq and Afghanistan. 'Course,
there's probably moer than a few Al Qaeda stooge/sympathizers in the
offshore support for one or more of those sites. Nothing useful there,
eh?
Hi Mr Ashcroft! Hi Mr. Ridge!! How big is my file?
