You must not have watched John Stossel's special last week.
Apparently the richest 1% of the U.S. pays 34% of the taxes.
And something like the richest 5% pays over 50% of the taxes.

It's too bad you missed the John Stossel show, you would've had an orgasm.
He's interviewing Al Sharpton, and Al's going on about how the richest 1%
pays 10% of the taxes, and how they need to be paying more like 15% of the
taxes, and then later in the interview he changed his estimate to 5% (or it
might have been the other way around). Then Stossel tells him it's actually
already at 34% and Sharpton was speechless, at least for a few seconds.

Amusing yes. But also scary. You know he would get at least 25-30% of
the vote if he were somehow nominated. That he is taken seriously at all
disturbs me. I guess they do it for ratings.

Your numbers are misleading, somewhat. If I was the Democratic nominee, I'd
get 25-30% of the vote, too. Hell, I think Hitler would get that much. Many
people are loathe to vote across political parties, and will avoid doing so
at all costs, even if it means giving Hitler 4 years in office. People in
this country (I can't speak for others) seem to break down into just a few
categories:
Hardcore Republicans (vote only Republican, would never think of voting any
other way)
Hardore Democrats (self-explanatory)
The Rest (includes Green Party, Independents, and everyone else who may be
either a Democrat or a Republican, but is at least willing to consider
ideas stemming from the "other" party)
If Sharpton was somehow nominated as the Democratic candidate for
President, the Hardcore Democrats would surely vote for him. They'd vote
for Hitler too.

Point well taken. I vote along party lines (at the national level) but
I would like to think that if my party put up an unacceptable candidate
that I would vote for the best man (or woman). I don't see this kind of
common sense coming from the other side though. I know why its not
done but I think you should have to pass a civics/economics/history test to
vote. Won't happen. Home of the Free. Free to be stupid and ignorant.
What a great country (for now, until it completes the inevitable march
toward socialism).
I hate talking politics. It depresses me.

See, it's one thing to vote along party lines, but it's another to vote
*only* along party lines. Usually, a candidate from "your" party seems (to
you) to be the best man/woman for the job. But it's just the nature of the
game that he/she turns out to sometimes *not* be the best candidate, and
someone from another party may have done a better job in office.
> I don't see this kind of
> common sense coming from the other side though.
Exactly what causes the difference in political parties. They all think the
others are stupid. Would rather talk to a brick wall than the "enemy".
> I know why its not
> done but I think you should have to pass a civics/economics/history test
to

Agreed. There should be (un-dumpable) tests for voting, parenthood, and any
other potentially-major decision one has to make in life. This will
guarantee that the ignorant remain both oblivious and non-breeding. Only
the conscious, intelligent community will be afforded any rights.
(Jesus, I sound pretty Orwellian. Or worse, Republican...)

OK.
I have a theory as to how the left and right see the world. I will try to
articulate it.
The left believes the right is either stupid or greedy. Stupid because they
don't realize that people are helpless and need someone to guide
them in their daily lives ...or... Greedy because they do see that people
are helpless and they take advantage of them.
The right believes the left is either stupid or greedy. Stupid because they
don't realize that people are capable of taking care of themselves ...or...
Greedy because they do see that people can take care of themselves
but intentionally keep them dependant to acquire power over them.
Somewhere in the middle is the truth. In the good ole USA we manage
to keep a good mix of both, but the balancing act can be upset easily if we
aren't careful.
Why can't everyone just see things my way?
