I new to this newsgroup but I need a little help. I have been searching for
any IT jobs in the Birmingham, Alabama area so that I could get experience
so that I may take the test. But I can not get hired with no professional
experience or an MCSE, which would kind of defeat the whole point of trying
to get the job. The only experience I have now is from fixing personal
computers of friends and family, but nothing at a professional company. I
have heard that the test is extremely hard. What is the best way to prepare
for this? I am currently taking classes on Windows 2000. Does Microsoft have
or sell any kind of practice tests? What is the price of the real test now?
How long does it take to test?

If you experience is with fixing PCs, I suggest you focus on getting the A+
cert.

and go to a local computer shop and offer some of your free time (for free).

Another solution is to forget about any computer jobs and learn something
like nursing etc... Hopefully, you will be able to find a few more jobs in
that field (This was not a joke)

You can find most of the info on the exams and practice tests at

I agree with above. From the sound of your email, you might want to look
into the A+ certification by CompTIA, www.comptia.org. they cost more than
MCP exams, but they are for life, you never have to re-certify (which you
do for MS) and they are a HELL of a lot more useful for getting entry level
jobs.

I will have to agree with some of you here. Start out by getting an A+ cert - get a base to build on. KNOW this stuff and it will carry you where you want to go. Offer your time to schools, PC shops, etc. Never hurts to keep poking your nose around of
fering free help. Someone will eventually take you up on it.

this is a good idea..
networking.. not the comp type.. speaking to people and getting refferals
will pay dividends.
then if you build up a reasonable client base. maybe a couple of small
businesses.. try going out on your own.
