| I finished my MCSE 2000 recently. Thinking of advancing
and specialising in security. However, don't really know
of any of my peers with the MCSE + Security certification.
Anyone around here with the certification wana share some
of the pains and sorrows in taking that? I would
appreciate it if you would also be able to tell me why the
certification kicks XXX.
Cheers
Benny

there are no pains & horrors. all you got to do is pass 2 exams (or 1) on
top of your mcse requ. one is usually a design and the other is an
elective. not the end of the world.
as far as value of the MCSE+S, i think it's too soon to tell 'cause it's a
fairly new cert.

Actually,you need 220,214,& 227 for a Security Spec. for
W2k MCSE.I hope you weren't lazy and took that 219
thing<BORING for a design test...Benefits? Knowing how to
config ISA servers to create DMZ's which defeat all kinds
of trojans and viruses that spread via NetBios.{You do
have that disabled don't you?}You also learn about how
vulnerable all other O/S's are whether their advocates
realize/admit it or not.If your employer is an idiot,I
suggest you not get to carried away with SecSpec as you
will want to lock down your network properly
afterwards.Anything less than W2k is a Fcking Downclient
that belongs on the edge of the perimeter or outside of it!
Downclient = Fallguy so you will know that you are under
attack. In the meantime, unless your attacker has
spoofed, you can track his AZZ while he thinks "he's in"
your network when in reality "he's center screen" for all
to see.
Security cost money! On the otherhand,Security saves more
money, time, & headaches than anything else.
Best of to you,
Infidel

| Thanks a lot for the information. At least I now have a
better basis to judge whether I should advance with
SecSpec.
In any case, I will only have 2 papers to fulfil before I
am also SecSpec certified.
Yes...I wasn't lazy and I did take 219.
So, with SecSpec additional, was it any better or did it
put any of you guys on a better edge when looking for a
job?

From the various trade publications that I've managed to con my way into getting, it appears that two of the bigger concerns for 2004 is Security and SPAM. Now having said that, a lot of companies are not planning on ramping their spending up on IT just
yet. Which translates to not many jobs available, however if their revenue increases significantly then they may be willing to spend more money.
If you have the time and resources I would say go for it. Even if all you would be doing is expanding your knowledge of the products. That way when the market improves you will be ready to jump on it rather than scrambling to catch up.
