Author Can any of you help me?
David Maggard

Let me start by saying I really hate doing this, but I am really desperate.

I have been a cold fusion programmer for over 4 years, but lost my job in
February.
A few months later I found my current 'job', which is consultant (1099)
sidework, in which I get paid per project upon completion.
But when I finish my last project for them about 2 weeks ago I was told that
they didn't have any money in the account to pay me with, and although they
say I should be getting a check in the next few days, I worry that if they
are this tight on money, whether they will be in business for long. I was
barely keeping my head above water with what they were paying me. I live in
a small town in southwest Utah, near Las Vegas, without much IT work
locally.
I am an expert (certified) in Cold Fusion with experience mainly in
eCommerce(shopping carts and credit card processing) and self replicating
websites(member sites, and email campaign tracking).
I have advanced skills with JavaScript.
I have intermediate skills with ASP and VBA.
I have advanced database skills with Access and SQL server 2000.
I have intermediate windows networking skills.
A friend of mine and I have been trying to get our MCSEs and MCDBAs but
haven't had the money to spend on a test network let alone the exam fees.
I have also been wanting to expand my skills into Linux and PHP as well.

I was hoping someone out there would have some work or know of some for me,
preferable something I could do from home or in Las Vegas.
I really would like to avoid moving, as I have been supporting my mother who
has chronic health problems, and we have a strong family presence here.

Please someone out there help me!

David Maggard

Or if any of you know of any programs that would help me out while I was
studying for MCSE, that would help to.

I wish I could offer you some help, David. You seem like a nice enough guy.

All I can do is wish you well.

Shirley someone with all your talents should be able to find some work
somewhere... look into contract work on the web. There are dozens of
contract sites out there.

I'm a hiring manager in the Las Vegas area and just recently recruited
someone with your skills and he's turning out great. Had you posted this
message about 3 weeks ago I probably could have helped ya. :-\

The LV area isn't the best to find work unless you know AS400s you can work
for the casinos and get paid a lot.

Hi, David.
I respect your need to care for your family. That's great. Family should
always comes first, IMHO.

A couple of thoughts - if you are a web developer/DB Administrator, why are
you considering becoming certified as an MCSE? Have you considered becoming
an MCSD? I mean no insult to the members of this group (some will take
insult anyway - that's okay), but MCSEs are becoming as popular as Ford
Tauruses in the US. If you don't have one yourself, you know someone else
who does. I don't know of any unemployed MCSDs/MCADs. However, MCSEs have a
tougher time of landing a job.

Your skill set shows me that your definitely ready to learn and work with
VB.NET. Get the count of the different types of certified folks here:
http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/mcp/certified.asp

You can earn an MCAD certification in VB.NET with three exams (vs. MCSE's
seven exams).

If you perform a search on http://www.dice.com, you'll find no CF jobs in
Nevada, however, here's what I found with .NET:
ASP.NET Developer - Eastridge Infotech Las Vegas, NV (8-1-2003)
..Net Software Developers - CDI Professional Services Las Vegas, NV
(7-22-2003)
..Net Software Architect - CDI Professional Services Las Vegas, NV
(7-22-2003)
..Net Software Test Engineer - CDI Professional Services Las Vegas, NV
(7-22-2003)
VB.net Software Engineer - Eastridge Infotech Reno, NV (8-5-2003)
C# Apps Developer - Equities Trading - Eric Robert Associates New York, NV
(8-1-2003)
Programmer - Legacy Solutions Reno, NV (8-1-2003)
Network Administrator - Vecor, Inc Elko, NV (8-4-2003)

Hey - there's an MCSE job on the end!

Good luck to you. Skip using expensive books when you study - use MSDN and
Transcender practice exams. You sound like you have great programming skills
that should put toward SW development.

This information is based purely on my opinions and you can take it or leave
it.

Sincerely,
Davin Mickelson

I really do understand your question, In the area I live most companies
aren't big enough to need or afford a server admin, a graphic designer, a
database admin, and a web site programmer. Most want a swiss army IT
worker, and while I can do all but the graphics fairly well, if I was
certified for MCSE and MCDBA as well as experienced, It would give me and
edge over other applicants, and since there are so few jobs in the area I am
hoping that it will help me get a more stable job. I feel that doing mcse
will help me hone my skills as well as give me something to show to local
employers.
An no offence, but I have always found VB to be an ugly language lacking C++
& javascripts simply beauty, I find C type syntax easier to read.
My impression of MCSD was it was geared more towards application
programming, which I really haven't done much of since High School, and not
web programming which is where my strength lies.

This explains your above opinion.

It's not the language, it's the programmer.

How much is a lot? All of the contracting gig's I have done in Vegas
were for the government, so I was wondering how much they get paid at
the casinos.

I am currently an MCSA (two exams shy of MCSE) and have yet to see an exam
question on web development. However, when I passed the C# exams
(particularly the web development exam), I came across JavaScript questions.

I wrongly assumed VB.NET would be a better fit because of your experience
in:
ASP (usually programmed in VBScript - perhaps you're a JScript developer)
VBA (Visual Basic for Applications - usually applied to Office development)
Access - a VBA application

You know, with VB.NET (or any of the other 30+ .NET languages), we now have
all four pillars of OOP and true multithreaded programming with garbage
collection (automatic memory clean up). Perhaps C# or JScript.NET is right
up your alley - syntactically the same as Java. By the way - all three
languages are free to download from Microsoft in the .NET SDK.

However, it seems as though you have your mind set and I respect that.
Good luck on your quest for MCSE.

Yes I perfer jscript ASP, but have done some VB, including some VBA, I can
do VB, just don't like to.
Thats why theres chocolate and vanilla.

I prefer CF to ASP tho, faster development, although I have been wanting to
learn C#.

I personally love to learn new things, but dislike doing it on a job if I
can do it a way I already know, due to the fact of the time involved in
learning it, I always advise clients on what I have experience in, if a
client wants it done a different way, good for me.
The company I have been working for was looking at doing their web based
stuff in ASP.NET, but when we discussed that I would have to learn it, they
opted to buy CF Server and save time.

My cut is about 60/hr when I do consulting work over there, so I am
curious. I could get a whole lot of house if I sold mine in LA and
moved to Vegas, plus no state tax. I'm willing to pay high (still
lower then LA) sales tax and about the same property tax for a small
cut in pay so I don't have to deal with the California governement
anymore.

The problem is that with the number of Californians going
up there, it's getting to be just as bad as CA. Besides,
hopefully the Govt issue will be taken care of in a couple
of months.

Somehow I doubt that .ca.gov's woes are gonna be cured by just recalling
Gray Davis.

Or by the results of one election for that matter.

J.R. Jones

*besides, then what would my .wa.gov model it's self after?*

I've been reading MCP Magazine's latest salary survey, and there's a section
of average IT salaries by city. Las Vegas was the third lowest at $51,100.
The only lower cities that I saw were Tucson at $49,300 and Oklahoma City at
$48,600. The highest, I think, was a place I used to live, San Jose at
$81,900, but keep in mind that the cost of living there was ridiculous. I
lived there nearly twenty years ago, and in the "rent controlled" district,
the cheapest apartment I could find, unfurnished, was $600/month. This was
TWENTY YEARS ago.

Orlando, the city closest to me, was $54,500.

I agree. You can't just treat the symptoms. To cure it, you have to get rid
of the tumor. It's too bad you have to get rid of a tumor with a cool
name... "San Francisco".
